Mackenzie Shirilla's father feared losing his job due to an investigation into his appearance in 'The Crash'.
Ohio criminal, Mackenzie Shirilla's case has received renewed attention ever since the release of Netflix's true-crime documentary, The Crash. At 17, she was convicted of dual murders by intentionally slamming her car into a brick building, killing her boyfriend, Dominic Russo and his friend, Davion Flanagan. Notably, she maintained that the crash was just an accident; however, she was convicted of the crime and might even face a lifetime imprisonment. Since her documentary's release, her family has come under intense public scrutiny, with her dad, Steve Shirilla, fearing a job loss.
Steve Shirilla, the father of convicted double-murderer, Mackenzie Shirilla, feels that he will soon be jobless because he was recently placed on administrative leave by the school where he teaches. The reason is that he and his wife participated in some interviews for The Crash, which was included in the documentary. Steve and his wife shared some supportive remarks about their daughter, sparking an online backlash. The authorities at Mary Queen of Peace School in Cleveland were unhappy about his negative publicity and thus decided to place him on leave for an unspecified period. With no official directive regarding his return to work, a hopeless Steve felt that he would be sacked soon.
Steve revealed that his current teaching contract is set to expire in June 2026, as per PEOPLE. Just a month earlier, his school launched an internal investigation into his appearance in the docuseries. During an interview on the True Crime This Week podcast, Steve expressed frustration with the school's handling of the situation, calling their actions a "knee-jerk overreaction" and noting that he felt abandoned by them. He further stated that he hoped the institution would at least pay him till June even if they decide to let him go. He was quoted as saying:
"I'm guessing that I'm not going to [have a job]... My contract's up in June. So, I would hope that they'll pay me through June. They're doing some sort of investigation...You know, this could have been over in a conversation, you know? That's got to be the biggest knee-jerk overreaction that you could ever imagine. I don't know why the school's not backing me up. That's not very Catholic. Where's the compassion, the love, the understanding that they put out to everybody?"
Viewers heavily criticised Steve for wearing a shirt featuring the word "BOOM" during his filmed interviews for The Crash. His outfit choice was condemned and seen as highly insensitive due to the violent nature of the fatal 100 mph car crash by his daughter. Besides that, in the documentary, Steve continued to defend Mackenzie and claim her innocence, which conflicted with her August 2023 conviction. He and his wife shared their resolve to keep fighting for their daughter as they believed that the car crash wasn't intentional.
Recently, Mary Katherine Crowder, who served time with Mackenzie Shirilla at the Ohio Reformatory for Women, shared some explosive inside deets regarding the dual murderer's life behind bars. Mary told the New York Post that Mackenzie had no remorse about killing two people. Instead, she allegedly lived a comfortable life in prison, and her parents and sugar daddies bankrolled her lifestyle. Mary stated that Natalie and Steve Shirilla continuously funded their daughter's prison commissary account and provided her with high-end items, makeup, and commissary goods.
