'Dark Matter' Season 2 Review, An Intimate And Emotional Reset That Leans On Family Over Thrills

The world that feels like the past brings warmth, but the arrival of another 'Jason' brings tension back. With 'Amanda', 'Ryan', 'Blair' and 'Leighton' reintroduced, the episode sets a personal, grounded tone, focusing more on relationships than technology.
A quiet start that breaks when the past catches up
The first episode picks up right after the family leaves their original world to find a new place to live. 'Jason', 'Daniela' and 'Charlie' are in a calm, green area surrounded by forest. They have lived there for months, and life feels peaceful for the first time in a long while.
That peace breaks when another version of 'Jason' arrives at their shelter. The encounter turns violent, and 'Daniela' is forced to kill him to protect the family. 'Jason' tries to hide the body, but authorities discover it. Because of that, the family must leave again and look for another world. 'Charlie' feels angry and tired, as he has to uproot his life once more.
After this, the episode shows the family stepping back into the box and glimpsing different versions of the same city. Some worlds look more advanced, some look more strict, some look more open. The creator of the story uses these quick glimpses to show how the same place can change based on choices and time.
The family then chooses a world that feels older and simpler. There is no internet and no social media. People seem friendly and warm. The pace of life is slower, close to a city from the eighties or nineties. They find out that the other versions of themselves in this world live far away, so they believe they can stay hidden and keep a low profile. Much of the episode stays with the inner life of the family rather than action. The focus is on the marriage of 'Jason' and 'Daniela' and how stress has changed them.
Their fears and anxieties come out in small talk and long silences. The episode frames the box as more than a machine. It works as a mirror for relationships and choices. Watching the same person behave differently in a different world shows how surroundings shape who a person becomes, even when the core stays the same. The bond between husband, wife, and son carries the emotional weight of the story.
Familiar faces return with their own stories to follow
Alongside the main family, the first episode also brings back other characters and sets up their paths. 'Amanda' has decided to stay in a world that looks peaceful and ideal. It feels like a place where she can rest after all the travel through strange realities. In this world, she meets 'Ryan' again. 'Blair' is shown still searching for a place where a new life is possible. Her journey has taken her through harsh and hostile worlds, and that search continues here. The episode does not give her much screen time, but her struggle adds another view of how hard it is to find a stable reality.
'Leighton' returns as the darker force. He remains fascinated by the box and by what the multiverse makes possible. His interest is not just scientific. He wants to control and shape a world according to his own ideas. The episode presents him as smart and driven, but also shaped by a fixed way of thinking. His scenes are quiet, yet they hint at larger plans involving the box.
The episode keeps the mystery of the box present but does not go deep into how it works. The explanation of the logic behind travel is touched upon, enough to keep interest alive, without turning into a lecture. The tone stays closer to adult drama than to pure thriller. There is tension when another version of 'Jason' appears, and again when the family must flee, but most of the hour stays with personal moments. The city that feels stuck in the past gives the story a different texture, warmer and more human.
By the end of the first episode, the family has found a temporary shelter, 'Amanda' and 'Ryan' are together in their own world, and 'Leighton' is moving closer to the box, setting the stage for what comes next.
