Before tying the knot with Shabana, Javed was married to Honey Irani, and the couple welcomed two children, Farhan Akhtar and Zoya Akhtar. In a recent interview, Shabana revealed that her marriage to Javed is 'hunky-dory'. She also discussed her bond with Javed’s ex-wife, Honey.

In a recent interview with Zoom, Shabana said her marriage to Javed Akhtar is not ‘hunky-dory’. The veteran actress revealed that it is Javed’s wit and intelligence that she likes the most. Shabana mentioned that her husband and her father are very similar. She admitted that she and Javed also have huge fights. Comparing Javed and her father, Shabana said:
"What attracted me most about him is his wit and intelligence. He was one of the brightest minds that I have ever met. My father and Javed are very similar. In discovering Javed, I felt I was rediscovering my father. They have the same kind of background. Their parents were progressive writers and were from the communist party. They loved Urdu poetry. Many people thought that ours should have been an arranged marriage. There are huge fights that Javed and I have. It’s not like it’s hunky-dory."
In the same interview, Shabana shared that her and Javed’s friendship is very strong. She went on to highlight Javed’s good communication skills. The veteran actress added that the screenwriter is very comfortable with any company. She said, "But our friendship is so strong, and our worldview is the same. Our ideologies are the same. That's what I feel is important. He is also the person who can be comfortable with any company. He has a very good ability to communicate with people. He is a very fair person, and I respect that a lot in him."

Further, in the interview, Shabana Azmi shared about her bond with her husband Javed’s ex-wife, Honey Irani. After Shabana and Javed got married, they received a lot of criticism as the latter was already married to Honey and had two kids. The veteran actress mentioned that it was Honey who dealt with the situation with maturity. Although it was not easy at the time, they decided to keep quiet. She called her bond with Honey a 'healthy relationship.' In her words:
"It was not easy. At that time, we chose to keep quiet. Having gone through that thing, my relationship with Honey Irani is an example of how people can get above their personal hurt and form a bond. Because for me, Honey is like a member of the family. Our relationship is very healthy."
Shabana shared that Honey never filled ears of her children with hatred against her. In fact, she never badmouths Javed in front of their kids. Lauding Honey, Shabana shared that Honey is a very sensible person. The veteran actress mentioned that Honey’s generosity and intelligence helped her to gel well. She was quoted as saying:
"She never filled the children's ears with hatred against me. She never badmouths her husband in front of their children. She didn't try to divide the children. She is a very sensible person. Because of her generosity and intelligence, it was very easy for me to do it. She is somebody I have deep respect for."
