Operation Safed Sagar was the code name for the Indian Air Force's high-altitude air campaign to flush out intruders from high-altitude posts. It was a frontline effort by the Indian Air Force's Golden Arrows squadron.
One of the main officers of the operation was Squadron Leader Ajay Ahuja, who was killed after being captured. As the series released on August 7, 2026, let us take you back to the valiant officer, Ajay Ahuja, who considered the Indian Air Force his first love.
Born on May 22, 1963, in Kota, Rajasthan, Ajay Ahuja was commissioned as a fighter pilot in the Indian Air Force in 1985 and later promoted to the rank of squadron leader in 1996. He was posted at Bhisiana air base near Bathinda in Punjab when the Kargil War broke out between India and Pakistan. Ajay Ahuja’s wife, Alka Ahuja, was always proud of her husband and his love for his country.
When Ajay got married to Alka, he clearly told her that she would always be his second wife. It was very shocking for her to hear something like this from her husband. But Alka felt extremely proud when she got to know that Ajay’s first wife was none other than the Indian Air Force.
In an interview with The Times of India, she spoke about her husband’s love for his nation and his sacrifice as she said:
“To my utter shock then flight lieutenant Ajay Ahuja told me that I was his second wife immediately upon my marriage. But when he explained that his first wife is none other than the Indian Air Force, I felt proud and found in him not only a loving husband but a person who had immense love for the motherland. Ajay proved it only a few years later when going beyond the line of duty he made the supreme sacrifice not even caring for falling in the enemy’s net.”
In the same conversation, Alka revealed that before Ajay’s marriage, he told his parents that his wife should be either a BSc or a B Ed. The reason behind it was that Ajay knew that his job was ‘too risky’ and if something happens to him, then his wife should be independent enough to manage the family on her own. Ajay and Alka has a son, Ankur Ahuja, who was very young when his father lost his life during Operation Safed Sagar.
Operation Safed Sagar was launched during the Kargil War. On May 27, 1999, Squadron leader Ajay Ahuja was the flight commander of a MiG21 and he led a two-aircraft mission for photo reconnaissance of enemy positions in the Batalik Sector. During that time, Ajay was informed that flight lieutenant Nachiketa had ejected from his MiG-27L after an engine flame-out.
Ajay immediately went to locate Nachiketa despite knowing the existence of enemy surface-to-air missiles in the area. He stayed over the enemy’s position and pointed out the location of the crashed aircraft. Soon Ajay’s aircraft was hit by an air missile but he ejected. According to the data released by the Indian Air Force, Ajay’s aircraft had crossed the Line of Control and was captured by the Pakistani army.
When Ajay’s body was handed over to the Indian authorities, a post-mortem was conducted, which revealed two fatal bullet wounds and a fractured knee. The report suggested that Ajay was alive when his aircraft was hit by the missile but he was tortured by the Pakistani army. His wife Alka told TOI:
“Ajay's MiG-21 fighter was hit by a surface-to-air missile. He had ejected but was captured and tortured by the Pakistan authorities as the postmortem — which was conducted at the Srinagar Base Hospital.”
Ajay Ahuja’s mortal remains, wrapped in tricolour, reached the airbase on May 29, 1999 and a huge number of villagers gathered to bid adieu to the braveheart. Ajay was also awarded Vir Chakra for exceptional courage while trying to rescue a fellow officer.
Ajay Ahuja was an inspiration to everyone. His honesty and love for his country made him an unforgettable hero even after 26 years of his death.
