The upcoming series is set during the 1999 Kargil War and focuses on the high-altitude air operations conducted by the Golden Arrows Squadron of the Indian Air Force. Notably, the operations helped the Indian Army to fight against the Pakistani forces.

Operation Safed Sagar was carried out to assist the Indian Army during the Kargil War
Operation Safed Sagar was the Indian Air Force’s codename for its air operations during the Kargil War, running from May to July 1999 alongside the Army’s Operation Vijay. It was launched after Indian patrols detected intrusions by Pakistani Army personnel and militants across the Line of Control in the Kargil, Drass, and Batalik sectors.
The intruders had occupied high-altitude posts overlooking the Srinagar-Leh highway, India’s key supply route to Ladakh. To evict them, the IAF had to operate in extreme terrain above 16,000 to 18,000 feet, making it one of the highest altitude air campaigns ever attempted. The IAF’s tasks were wide-ranging. It carried out reconnaissance with MiG-25s, MiG-21s, and Canberras to map enemy positions.
It conducted air interdiction with Mirage-2000s and Jaguars to cut supply lines behind enemy lines. It provided close air support to ground troops using MiG-21s, MiG-23s, MiG-27s, and later Mirage-2000s. Helicopters, including Mi-17s and Mi-8s, flew thousands of sorties to transport troops, ammunition, and to evacuate casualties, often under enemy anti-aircraft fire. Operations began on May 26, 1999.
Early strikes faced challenges because conventional bombing was ineffective at such a high altitude. The campaign changed with the deployment of Mirage-2000s armed with laser-guided munitions. These aircraft struck enemy bunkers, artillery positions, and supply dumps on peaks like Tololing and Tiger Hill with much greater accuracy.
This degraded the intruders’ hold and disrupted their logistics, giving the Army a clear advantage on the ground. The operation came at a cost. A MiG-27 was lost to an engine flameout, and a MiG-21 was shot down. Squadron Leader Ajay Ahuja, who ejected from the MiG-21, was killed after being captured. On May 28, 1999, a Mi-17 helicopter was shot down by a Stinger missile, killing all four crew members.
Despite these losses, the IAF flew over 5,000 sorties in about two months. Operation Safed Sagar ended in July 1999 after the withdrawal of intruding forces. It was significant as the first large-scale use of air power between two nuclear-armed nations since 1947. The operation also provided key lessons in high-altitude warfare, precision targeting, and joint operations that shaped IAF doctrine afterward.
Lead actors of the Netflix series open up about the problems they faced while filming
As mentioned, the Netflix show Operation Safed Sagar will focus on a real-life operation that happened during the Kargil War in 1999. Jimmy Shergill and Siddharth are playing important roles in the show. The actors recently opened up about their experience of filming the series.
The real operation was conducted at 18,000 feet above sea level. The makers of the series tried to keep things as real as possible, with filming done at almost 16,500 feet. A few actors had to stay at 13,000 feet for multiple weeks, and one of them was Siddharth. The Maha Samudram star appreciated the crew for how they managed to fight altitude sickness and complete filming in time.
On the other hand, Jimmy Shergill said that although he has filmed in similar conditions in the past, the situation was a little different this time. He revealed that a few of the crew members also fell sick after spending so much time at the altitude.
Jimmy also expressed his concern that once the show is released, viewers will believe that it is easy to shoot at those altitudes without understanding the risks that were taken in real life during the operation. He stated:
“They are going to kill a lot of people after this because they will think: ‘These people shot for 1.5 months, we only have to do it for 20 days.’ They won’t survive 3 days. If someone sends me again, I will run back.”
