Add BollywoodShaadis on GoogleActor Sooraj Pancholi has long faced online scrutiny due to his late girlfriend, Jiah Khan's, suicide case. The actress passed away in 2013, and following a brief detention and years of trial, Sooraj had his name cleared from the case. However, the discussion around the same persisted for years, with questions of accountability hurled at Sooraj. Recently, in August 2026, he broke his 14-year silence regarding the tragedy by dropping an emotional statement on his Instagram account.
He strongly condemned the media reports still labeling the Jiah Khan suicide case as an "unanswered" mystery despite him being legally acquitted by a special CBI court. Amid that, his mother, Zarina Wahab's shocking revelations regarding Jiah Khan's suicide came under the spotlight.
In an interview with Lehren, veteran actress Zarina Wahab finally opened up about Jiah's death. Breaking her 11-year silence, Sooraj Pancholi's mother spoke on the sensitive issue and her son's entanglement in the case in 2024. At that time, Zarina made a shocking claim stating that Jia was suicidal even before dating Sooraj Pancholi. As per her, the Housefull actress tried to take her own life multiple times, but unfortunately succeeded while she was Sooraj's girlfriend. Zarina said:
"Uske pehle bhi usne 4-5 baar try kiya hai, lekin naseeb aisi thi ki jab mere bete ka turn aaya toh it happened."
When Jiah died, she left a note blaming her "lover" for her fate. As she was dating Sooraj at that time, all fingers pointed at him. The Hero star was accused of abetting her suicide, as the CBI chargesheet claimed that Jiah's suicide was driven by 'broken promises' from her "lover", including a promise of engagement that went unfulfilled. Following that, Sooraj and his family had to undergo a 10-year ordeal, until April 2023, when the CBI court cleared him of all charges.
Sooraj's mother opened up about the "bad time" and asserted that whoever made her son's life harder with lies will definitely face their karma. She also shared that it affected Sooraj's career negatively. Notably, the actor faced massive isolation in the Bollywood industry; his film projects were postponed until his decade-long legal battle ended in acquittal. Recalling the tough time, Zarina mentioned:
"We all went through a bad time, but I believe in one thing: 'If you spoil anybody's life with lies, take it as a loan; it will come to you with interest.' Karma says that. Hum log ne intezaar kiya jab he was not guilty. It took 10 years, but he is out of it, and I am happy. It has affected Sooraj's career."
Additionally, Zarina Wahab also made some suggestive comments regarding Jia Khan's character. Sooraj Pancholi's mom didn't exactly explain what she meant; however, she said that everyone was already aware of what kind of person Jia was. Zarina said that she wouldn't open up on the matter as she didn't want to stoop down to such a level. Her exact words were:
"Woh kya karti thi sab jaante hai. I don't want to open my mouth. Bolke mein apne aap ko chota nahi karna chahti hoon."
In an emotional interview with Nayandeep Rakshit, Zarina Wahab claimed that her son broke up with the Ghajini actress a month before her suicide. Citing the reason, Zarina said that both Jiah and Sooraj's parents were unhappy with their relationship. Zarina further claimed that the breakup took place right before Salman Khan launched Sooraj for Hero, while Jiah Khan faced yet another rejection from a Telugu movie, leading to her depression and eventual death.
