Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk was taken away from Jantar Mantar on the 21st day of his hunger strike, which he began on June 28, 2026, in solidarity with the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP). Now, his wife, Gitanjali J Angmo, has stepped into the spotlight, declaring that she will lead the Parliament march scheduled for July 20, 2026, if her husband is unable to participate and insisting that no treatment be administered without the family's consent.

Speaking to reporters outside Safdarjung Hospital on Saturday, Gitanjali Angmo said the movement would continue regardless of Wangchuk's condition. She declared:

"The youth have kept the movement on. Even if Sonam can't participate in the march, I will represent him and lead the march on Monday. It's not that by forcefully removing Sonam they can stop it."

She said Wangchuk joined the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP)-led agitation because he believed its demands for education reforms were genuine. "Gen Z has shown how peacefully they can protest," she said, describing the campaign as an organic movement that has grown beyond the issue of exam paper leaks.

Throughout the day, Angmo has been sharing updates on X (formerly Twitter), urging doctors not to administer oral or intravenous treatment without the consent of Wangchuk's family or the medical team that had monitored him during his hunger strike.

She later alleged inconsistencies in the hospital's medical reports, claiming Wangchuk's potassium level had reportedly dropped from 4.3 to 2.9 within 24 hours.

Calling the situation a "lack of transparency," Angmo said the family had sought copies of Wangchuk's medical reports and requested an independent examination before consenting to treatment.

"I've asked them not to administer potassium. We are going to do another test from a different lab before giving medicines. Sonam is absolutely fine, and we will soon shift him to a hospital we trust," she said.

She also questioned the heavy police presence at the hospital and alleged that the family had not been allowed to carry mobile phones inside. In her latest update, Angmo alleged that the hospital authorities are "not allowing" her to "get a second opinion by taking him to another lab," nor are they giving her blood samples to get them tested elsewhere.
