Sonam Wangchuk began his hunger strike on June 28, 2026 in solidarity with the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP). The 59-year-old lost over 8.9 kg of body weight and soon his health condition worsened. The situation turned so critical that the Delhi High Court has demanded an urgent response from the government.
As Wangchuk’s health conditions deteriorated, all eyes were on his wife, Gitanjali J Angmo, who is his constant pillar of strength. She too joined the protest, standing with him in solidarity amid his hunger strike. Wangchuk’s wife, Gitanjali called his decision to carry out the protest as ‘organic’.
She told The Hindu that Wangchuk wanted to ensure that the cause for which he had sat for a hunger strike should not be sabotaged due to any reason. Wangchuk’s protest sought resignation of Union Education minister, Dharmendra Pradhan. Speaking about Wangchuk’s dedication, Gitanjali said:
“He is passionate about education. When he came to know about the social media movement and the discontent of the youth, he connected with the issue. It all happened in an organic way. He wants to hand-hold them and wants every well-meaning person to join the movement.”
Not just this, Gitanjali J Angmo also revealed that her husband has stood up for a genuine issue as he wanted to be the third voice of Cockroach Janta Party (CJP). She pointed out that the Minister’s resignation was important as the paper leak resulted in the suicide of many students. Ms. Angmo said that the longest Mr. Wangchuk has fasted is for 21 days.

Speaking about Sonam Wangchuk's wife, Gitanjali J Angmo, she was born in Balasore in Odisha. Gitanjali comes from a Punjabi Jain family, and her upbringing has shaped her interest in social development right from a very young age. Gitanjali J Angmo took a degree in Physics from Fakir Mohan University, reportedly before she did management studies. She also has an MBA in Marketing and Finance from Xavier Institute Of Management, Bhubaneswar.
Sonam Wangchuk and Gitanjali J Angmo met at an education conference. Their passion in the field of education brought them together. Wangchuk and Angmo always have each other’s back and have always been an inspiration to one another. Sonam Wangchuk and Gitanjali J Angmo have no children and the couple spend their time for social causes.
Before joining the CJP protest, Wangchuk was involved in a movement over the demand for stronger constitutional protections for Ladakh and its inclusion in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution. He was detained under the Act, through which an individual can be held for a year without trial, following the violence in Leh city on September 24, 2025, which left four people dead. Gitanjali travelled to Jodhpur to meet Wangchuk in jail. She spoke about his mental and emotional state and penned:
“Met @Wangchuk66 today with @RitamKhare and got the detention order, which we will challenge. His spirit is undaunted. His commitment resolute! His resilience intact! He conveys heartfelt thanks to all for their support and solidarity."
