Dianna Russini is all set to return to sportscasting this NFL season, and she reportedly plans to address the elephant in the room first. The NFL insider's name has been all over the news in the last few months, thanks to her alleged affair with New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel.

The 43-year-old NFL reporter resigned from The Athletic in April 2026 after photos surfaced showing her with Vrabel at a luxury resort in Sedona, Arizona. Their images sparked questions about the nature of their relationship, particularly because both were married.

Dianna Russini plans to address the Mike Vrabel drama before returning to sportscasting

A source familiar with Russini's situation told Page Six that she plans to address the scandal when she takes her next job. According to the source, Russini wants to speak on the controversy, explain her perspective, and then try to put the chapter behind her.

It’s still unclear when Russini might make her return, but sources say she’s weighing options from multiple media outlets and could potentially fill more than one role. During the course of the controversy, the NFL insider was reportedly inundated with interview requests from major television networks, podcasts, and even reality shows.

However, she chose not to speak publicly at the time. Instead, she appeared determined to wait until she could control the circumstances surrounding her return. The NFL media landscape is also expected to welcome her back. A source told Page Six that many owners, coaches, staff members, and players have remained supportive of Russini and want to see her return.

What happened between Dianna Russini and Mike Vrabel?

The scandal reached new heights in April 2026 when Page Six shared photos of Russini and Vrabel, showing them sharing a cozy time together. They were seen holding hands, hugging, and spending time together at a resort in Sedona. The controversy intensified when additional photographs emerged. One set showed Russini and Vrabel kissing at a New York City bar years earlier, further fueling questions about their relationship.

Many insiders later revealed their affair had been an "open secret" in NFL circles. The situation prompted The Athletic to launch an internal investigation into whether Russini had violated the organization's journalism standards. The investigation found Russini's relationship with Vrabel was "in clear violation" of the newsroom's standards because it should have been disclosed, regardless of whether the relationship was romantic.

Both Mike and Dianna are married to their respective partners; Mike to his wife of 25+ years, Jen Vrabel, and Dianna to her husband, Kevin Goldschmidt, whom she married in September 2020. Despite being married, the duo's closeness has raised eyebrows for years, even when Mike repeatedly stated, "I love [my wife] to death."

Russini had reportedly described some of those stories as "awkward or even uncomfortable" at that time, and responded with a brief statement: "I stand by any and all reporting I’ve ever done in my career." In their personal lives, both have remained married to their respective spouses and have been seen in public together.

Mike Vrabel wanted to publicly defend Dianna Russini after the scandal surfaced

While Mike called his interaction with Dianna "professional" and had no romantic connection, the alleged affair blew up and eventually cost Russini her job at The Athletic, while Vrabel remained the head coach of the Patriots. He has repeatedly indicated that he wants to leave the controversy behind. When asked about the investigation's findings in September, the Patriots coach said he had no reaction and that he and the team had "moved on." Addressing the affair buzz, Vrabel had previously told the Post:

"These photos show a completely innocent interaction, and any suggestion otherwise is laughable. This doesn't deserve any further response."

But that wasn't the statement he originally had in mind. ESPN reported later that Vrabel wanted to "issue a stronger statement that defended Russini's reporting ethics but settled on downplaying the photos." He has continued preparing the Patriots for the NFL season, while Russini has focused on figuring out what comes next. Now, with another NFL season underway, Russini appears ready to step back into the spotlight.
