Although the actor’s name has been linked with many personalities over the years, he was once in a relationship with Taylor Swift from 2010 to 2011.
Taylor Swift released a single that was believed to be aimed at Jake Gyllenhaal
Taylor Swift and Jake Gyllenhaal’s split was confirmed by an insider in January 2011. The source said that they were over and that the relationship ended the previous month, noting they spent the New Year separately.
The reason reported at the time was a mix of age gap and attention. Sources told Us Weekly and PEOPLE that Gyllenhaal felt uncomfortable with the publicity around dating Swift and could feel the nine-year age difference: he was 29, and she was 20.
One insider said Gyllenhaal had reached out and started the relationship but then was not feeling it anymore and that the attention was a lot. The same reports said he wanted to keep his private life away from the public eye and that was hard to do dating Swift, and that Swift felt really upset and burnt out because she had moved fast. Taylor never named him but allegedly channeled the fallout into her studio album, Red.
She later said that Red came from an absolute crash-and-burn heartbreak and that All Too Well was the hardest song to write because it started as a 10-minute stream of everything she wanted to say. In All Too Well, she describes what went wrong from her perspective. In the original, Taylor says she left her scarf at Jake's sister’s house, and he kept it; they danced in the refrigerator light, and he went from warm to cold.
Taylor added more direct reasons in the 10-minute version. She referred in the lyrics to how, if they had been closer in age, maybe it would have been fine. Taylor said that he missed her 21st birthday and she stood in her party dress, and that he was still dating people her age as he got older.
Those lyrics are why fans and press believe the song is aimed at Gyllenhaal. The actor later told Esquire in an interview that the single had nothing to do with him and that it was about Taylor’s relationship with her fans. Jake even clarified that he had not listened to the new version of the song.

Taylor Swift and Jake Gyllenhaal were first linked in October 2010 after being photographed backstage at Saturday Night Live and on a walk in Brooklyn, with PEOPLE reporting they were set up by Gwyneth Paltrow.
Through late October and early November 2010, they were seen dating around New York, including a coffee date where both ordered maple lattes, later referenced in All Too Well's lyrics. On Thanksgiving weekend 2010, they spent the holiday together at his sister Maggie Gyllenhaal's house in Brooklyn. They were last seen together publicly in early December 2010 in Los Angeles.
Swift turned 21 on December 13, 2010. Her relationship with Jake reportedly ended in mid-December, with reports at the time saying it was by phone call around Christmas due to discomfort with the age gap and publicity. PEOPLE confirmed the split on January 4, 2011, with a source saying they are over and that it ended the previous month.
