Add BollywoodShaadis on GoogleFans of actor Sam Neill are mourning his sudden death, as it was revealed that he passed away on July 13, 2026. He was 78 years old when he breathed his last. It is worth mentioning that Sam was best known for his role as ‘Dr Alan Grant’ in the Jurassic Park franchise. Despite his fame, Sam once showed that he was no different from the rest of us as he went on a rant about how robots are replacing humans.
Last year, Sam Neill went on a rant about grocery store etiquette on social media. Taking to his Instagram handle, he expressed his outrage at having to check out his own groceries. Slamming the system, Sam argued that with the increase in self-checkout machines, it would decrease the jobs for people in the same stores. Holding his hand to his ear in the self-recorded video, Sam said:
“Call me old-fashioned. Thank you. But I refuse to check out my own groceries at a supermarket. I want a human being to assist me. I don't think that's too much to ask.”
It is worth mentioning that before this, Sam had revealed he was in remission after a two-year battle with stage-three blood cancer. While he did not say whether this had anything to do with his rant, Sam shared his concern about robots taking over and replacing humans. He added in the video:
“And every time I checked out something for myself – you got to think like this – I'm doing someone out of a job. And if robots and self-serving is going to do all the work everywhere, who's going to be buying the groceries at the checkout? It's an old-fashioned question, but it's a legitimate one, I think.”
Sam could be heard finishing off the video while whispering “old-fashioned” as he had a cheeky grin on his face. To reiterate the same point, he wrote in the caption, “Call me old-fashioned!”
Sam's video instantly grabbed the attention of social media users, who agreed that they, too, missed the human interaction of going grocery shopping, when a clerk would assist them at checkout rather than a robot. Taking to the actor’s comment section, one user wrote, “How lovely it is to have someone say hello, thanks and have a nice day when one is at the store.”
Another wrote, “Agree 100 per cent and would like to add we need more human interactions to regain some of the empathy, kindness, compassion, and politeness that seem to be evaporating the last few years.” A fan penned, “You go, Sam! It's like how I still prefer physical menus than the QR code bull—” A comment read, “Agree with you, and being old-fashioned is really lovely.”
For those who don't know, some time before his death, Sam had shared that he was finally cancer-free after battling stage-three blood cancer for a long time. After he passed away, Sam's family noted that his death was sudden even for them, as Sam had been cancer-free. The official statement released by The Jungle Book star’s family can be read as:
“It is with immense sadness that the whanau (family) of Sam Neill share the news of his passing on Monday 13th July, in Sydney, Australia. Sam was surrounded by family and passed with the dignity that has characterised his whole life. The loss was sudden and unexpected but blessed by the fact that Sam remained cancer free.”
