Sam Neill found working in India “overwhelming”

Back in 2022, Sam Neill sat down for an interview with Hindustan Times. He opened up about the “overload time” he had shooting in India and how those memories still continued to bring a smile to his face years later. For those unaware, Sam had the opportunity to travel to India in the 90s while shooting Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book (1994). This introduced him to the ‘desi’ world in Mumbai and Jodhpur.

Sam admitted that while the experience was amazing, he also "found it overwhelming.” Whenever anyone said India to him, the time he spent there would always come back to him. He was quoted as saying:

“I made a film in the country, and when you say India to me, all the time spent making it comes back to me so vividly. It was an amazing experience for me to be there. I found it overwhelming. It was beautiful, but it was too beautiful. It was noisy, but it was too noisy. It was colourful, but it was too colourful. All my senses were overloaded the whole time I was in the country.”

Sam deemed India “an extraordinary place” and gushed about how, during his stay, he got to stay at the Jodhpur palace. However, he clarified that they stayed at the part which had been converted to a hotel. Painting a picture of his experience, he said:

“We stayed at the enormous palace of the Maharaja of Jodhpur, the part which is a hotel. It was the most beautiful place. But it was the evenings on the terrace, overlooking the plains in one direction in Jodhpur, and in the other direction, the distant horizons of that extraordinary arid land with that lovely blue sky changing colour as the sun goes down.”

During the same conversation, Sam Neill claimed that there were certain aspects of various experiences that made him “anxious.” This included hurtling down Indian roads in what he called 50s Morris taxis that dodged people carrying things while weaving around cars. He recalled that he would have to close his eyes in the cars “because every minute we seem to be close to death.” But he said with a laugh during the interview that at the time it was completely normal in India.

Sam added that after eight or ten weeks, when he finally got on the plane to return home, he “breathed a sigh of relief.” He thought to himself that it was one of the most extraordinary experiences of his life, but he still needed a little calm, something which was lacking during his time in the country.

Sam Neill admitted that his ancestors had served in India with the Army

In addition to talking about his experiences in India, Sam Neill opened up about how his bond with the country runs on a more personal level. He claimed that his ancestors had served in India with the Army. Sam said that it was a happy coincidence for him to be working on The Jungle Book as he played the role of a British officer, just what his ancestors were. He shared:

“The generation on my mother’s side were a part of the Indian army, so we go way back. We have a lot of family connections there. In some way, it’s somewhere in my DNA. India felt like I was going home.”
