Who is Gigi Bannister? Inside her love story with Reggie Bannister

Gigi Bannister (Gigi Fast Elk Porter) is more than the Phantasm icon's wife: she was his best friend and creative partner. However, she is best known for her prolific work in the horror genre and her decades-long creative partnership with the late Phantasm star.

The couple first met in the early '90s when fellow horror icon Michael Berryman reportedly introduced them. Gigi, with her background in entertainment, modeling, acting, producing, and visual effects, became a well-known face in the horror production industry. Over the years, she and Reggie would collaborate on several projects.

Their relationship developed away from the traditional Hollywood spotlight, and after dating for several years, the pair eventually tied the knot on September 29, 2001. The date had special significance because it was also Reggie's birthday.

According to Gigi, they intentionally chose his birthday as their wedding anniversary so that neither of them would ever forget it. The couple's marriage lasted more than two decades, growing stronger through Bannister's declining health. In his final years, Gigi became one of the most important people involved in his day-to-day care.

Who was Reggie Bannister's first wife?

Despite spending nearly half a lifetime together, Reggie and Gigi never had kids of their own. However, the actor did have a daughter from a previous marriage. In case you didn't know,  Gigi was not Bannister's first wife but certainly is his longest relationship after two failed marriages.

Before marrying Gigi in 2001, Reggie had been married twice. His first wife was Susan McDonald Akalski, whom he married in 1981 and later divorced in 1987. The following year, the Phantasm star married a second time to a woman named Gayle Bannister. After nine years of marriage, the couple parted ways in 1997.

Reggie found his lasting love in Gigi, although the couple never had any children. The actor had one daughter, Ellen Bannister, from his first marriage, and later, he became a loving stepfather and grandfather figure within his extended family through Gigi's side.

In the final years of their marriage, family played a vital role in Reggie's life, and though they never had kids of their own, the couple became parents to many feline companions: Grey Guy, Checkers, Mr. Tiggy (who inspired their children's book The Adventurous Mr. Tiggy), and Miss Lucy.

Reggie Bannister's cat alerted Gigi after the actor died in his sleep

The couple made their home in the mountains of Southern California, where they enjoyed a more private existence. As Bannister's Parkinson's disease and Lewy body dementia progressed, Gigi became increasingly involved in his care. She remained with him through his most difficult period and was beside him when he died. Shortly after the news of Reggie's death surfaced, Gigi wrote on Facebook that the actor "ate ice cream every night for weeks" in his final months.

Reggie Bannister died peacefully in his sleep in the early hours of Sunday. After his death, Gigi shared an emotional tribute describing the moment she realized her husband had passed away. She said she had checked on him earlier in the morning and found him sleeping peacefully. Later, their cat, GG, went upstairs and prompted her to check on Bannister again. She wrote:

"At 0345 am on Sunday, August 9, 2026, I last checked on my beloved Reggie Bannister's condition. He was panting but quiet and asleep. I was exhausted, so I went back to sleep. At 0600 hours, our kitty, GG (Grey Guy), who has been sleeping on Reggie's bed at night, came running upstairs and jumped onto the bed meowing! I went down to see what the problem was...Somewhere inside... in my soul... I knew."

Reggie's family said that Gigi had promised to stay with him until the end, and she kept her word. After his passing, she found comfort in knowing that he was no longer suffering.

“I will see you on the flip side, honey bunny,” she wrote, ending her farewell with the words, "Save me a hug! Wait for me."
