Before her marriage to Keith, Nicole Kidman was married to Tom Cruise. However, many believed that her marriage to the Hollywood superstar ended due to her alleged affair with Ewan McGregor.
It's been over two decades since Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor starred in Baz Luhrmann’s Moulin Rouge. In an interview, the duo revealed that they spent a year in production, where they even had to take part in singing and dancing workshops. Nicole recalled thinking Ewan had the most exclusive voice and that she'd never be able to hit those high notes.
Meanwhile, her co-star claimed that it wasn't true and that they were both in the same boat. Nicole still reiterated that Ewan was “so much better than me.”
The actors also recounted that they would have wild parties on Saturday nights during the production of Moulin Rouge. At times, Nicole and Ewan would end up dancing on the tables. When asked if Ewan could remember the parties, he replied, “Not all of them. Don't remember all of them.”
Soon after the production of Moulin Rouge wrapped, Nicole and Tom Cruise split up. The news came as a shock to many, as they were married for nearly 11 years. This intensified rumors that Nicole had an affair with Ewan McGregor. What made the matter worse was that Nicole had previously admitted to “crushing on him” during this period. She also said that she “fell in love with Ewan every time he sang.”
On the other hand, Ewan McGregor said that he and Nicole had a “wonderful time” during the production of Moulin Rouge. Calling Nicole a wonderful woman, he said that their “chemistry came naturally.” He added:
“We were totally immersed in the world of the Moulin Rouge. As it was such a long movie, in the end Nicole and I had a dependency on each other.”
According to the movie’s head choreographer, they would often have to kick out Nicole and Ewan from rehearsals as they couldn't stop “giggling with one another.” Speculation about Ewan and Nicole’s affair reached a point that the former had to go on record to say that people’s assumptions were incorrect.
Ewan claimed that he was totally unaware that Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise’s marriage was in trouble. He said:
"I didn’t have an affair with Nicole Kidman. It had nothing to do with me. I had no idea anything was wrong with the marriage. No idea. And I haven’t spoken to her since, so I don’t know anything about it.”
Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise's divorce was finalized in 2001. In a statement, their representative revealed the reason behind the split as “irreconcilable differences.” They also said that due to the difficulties inherent in divergent careers, Nicole and Tom would constantly be apart from each other, leading them to think that an amicable separation seemed like the best option for them.
When Tom Cruise was asked about why he initiated the separation, he told a leading publication that Nicole already knows why. In his words:
“She knows why, and I know why. She's the mother of my children, and I wish her well. And I think that you just move on. And I don't say that lightly. I don't say that with anything."
