The sixth day of the Lindsay Clancy murder trial took place on Tuesday, August 4, 2026. For the first time, the former nurse addressed the court when Massachusetts Superior Court Judge William Sullivan asked whether she agreed to stipulate certain facts related to DNA evidence.
"Yes, your honor," Clancy replied, marking her first public statement since the proceedings began. The agreement means prosecutors no longer need to call several witnesses to establish the chain of custody for DNA evidence. But it certainly does not affect the central issue before the jury, i.e., whether the 35-year-old should be held criminally responsible for the deaths of her children.
While Clancy has never denied killing her three kids, she has pleaded not guilty. While her legal team does not dispute that she killed 5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson, and 8-month-old Callan, they argue she was suffering from postpartum psychosis and an undiagnosed bipolar disorder that severely impaired her grasp on reality.
Clancy's ex-husband, Patrick Clancy, has also backed this claim, stating she was a wonderful wife and a loving mother whose mental health was severely disturbed to think straight.
Lindsay Clancy's response comes after the court was presented with deeply personal entries from her private journal that painted a troubling picture of her deteriorating mental state in the months leading up to the January 2023 killings.
One of her November 18, 2022 entries read, "I am so desperate for a mental break from taking care of everyone, that my mind is trying to find something physically wrong with me." Other entries described crushing guilt for not being able to breastfeed, acute anxiety about her infant son’s sleep schedule, constant brain fog, and an inability to think straight.
Clancy wrote, "I have crazy brain fog. I feel like I can't make a plan. I live moment to moment waiting for the next nap time. I'm terrified of Cal getting overtired now because I feel I can't help him." She also wrote that she wanted help and wanted to get better, with one journal entry stating, "I want help. I want to be well."
According to her attorneys, Clancy's writings support their argument that she was experiencing a severe psychiatric crisis fueled by postpartum psychosis, insomnia, anxiety, and a complicated mix of psychiatric medications.
In last week's hearing, Patrick Clancy testified as the first witness of the case, describing the months leading up to the deaths of their children. He told jurors that Lindsay's mental health had deteriorated significantly after the birth of their youngest child.
Patrick testified that Lindsay first sought treatment for anxiety in September 2022, several months after she gave birth to their youngest child, Callan. Although she was prescribed antidepressants, he said her symptoms only worsened over time. He told the jurors that she "kept getting worse and worse."
He shared that Lindsay underwent multiple medication changes and switched psychiatrists. She was even hospitalized after experiencing suicidal thoughts and intrusive thoughts about harming her children or fearing something terrible would happen to them.
Patrick said Lindsay grew increasingly depressed, losing weight, and struggling emotionally in December 2022. Prosecutors, however, maintain that Clancy carefully planned the killings and should be found criminally responsible.
They allege that on January 24, 2023, Clancy intentionally asked her husband, Patrick Clancy, to leave the house on errands before strangling all three children with exercise bands in the family's basement. Patrick later returned home to discover the devastating scene before making an emotional 911 call in which he repeatedly cried, "She killed the kids!"
After the killings, Clancy jumped from a second-story window. She survived but was left paralyzed from the waist down and now appears in court in a wheelchair.
