Patrick Clancy says Lindsay appeared happy on the fateful day
On Thursday, Patrick Clancy took the stand in a Massachusetts courtroom, recalling the day his children were found dead in his and Lindsay's house. As the first witness in the case, Patrick described the months leading up to the deaths of their children, including 5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson, and 8-month-old Callan.
Patrick told jurors that Lindsay's mental health had deteriorated significantly after the birth of their youngest child. However, on the day of the killings, he believed she was finally improving. He recalled exchanging messages with Lindsay throughout January 24, 2023, the day prosecutors allege she strangled their three children inside the family's Duxbury home.
Speaking about Lindsay's mood on that fateful day, Patrick said, "She seemed happy" and was "having one of her best days."
He described a seemingly normal day in which Lindsay played outside with the children, built a snowman, completed crafts, and later texted him asking whether he wanted takeout for dinner. Patrick sent his order, believing everything was fine, before returning home to what prosecutors have described as a horrific crime scene.
Lindsay Clancy's mental health declined in the months leading up to the killings
Patrick testified that Lindsay first sought treatment for anxiety in September 2022, several months after she gave birth to their youngest child, Callan. Although she was prescribed antidepressants, he said her symptoms only worsened over time. He told the jurors that she "kept getting worse and worse."
A visibly emotional father of the late kids shared that Lindsay underwent multiple medication changes and switched psychiatrists. She was even hospitalized after experiencing suicidal thoughts and intrusive thoughts about harming her children or fearing something terrible would happen to them.
Patrick said December 2022 marked a major turning point. "That was really where her big spiral started," he testified, describing her as increasingly depressed, losing weight, and struggling emotionally.
The closely watched case has renewed national attention on postpartum psychosis, a rare but severe psychiatric emergency that mothers are at risk of developing after childbirth.
So, what exactly is postpartum psychosis? Unlike postpartum depression, postpartum psychosis may involve hallucinations, delusions, paranoia, confusion, rapid mood swings, and a loss of touch with reality. Mental health experts say symptoms can fluctuate dramatically, meaning someone may appear to improve before experiencing a sudden psychiatric crisis. Experts note that postpartum psychosis affects approximately one to two mothers per 1,000 births and requires immediate medical treatment and hospitalization.
Patrick Clancy has since forgiven his ex-wife, arguing that Lindsay was "not a monster" but a deeply loving person who had become severely sick. On the fateful day, when he reached his Massachusetts home to find his deceased kids, Lindsay jumped from a second-story window. Though she survived the fall, she was left permanently paralysed from the waist down.
Patrick Clancy also previously shared about Lindsay's postpartum troubles. Shortly after the deaths in 2023, Patrick released an emotional public statement saying he had forgiven Lindsay while mourning the loss of their children.
"My family was the best thing that ever happened to me," he wrote at the time. "Our marriage was wonderful and diametrically grew stronger as her condition rapidly worsened."
What happens next in Lindsay Clancy's trial?
Defense argues that Lindsay had postpartum psychosis and bipolar disorder, worsened by antidepressants prescribed after her third child’s birth. But the prosecution rejects that claim, arguing her actions were deliberate and rational.
More than 200 witnesses are expected to testify in the trial, including first responders, psychiatrists, medical professionals and family members, prosecutors said, with the trial expected to last six to eight weeks. If Lindsay Clancy is found guilty of all three counts of first-degree murder, she could face a life sentence without the possibility of parole. But if the jury finds her not guilty by reason of insanity, she could be committed to a state psychiatric hospital.
