Mary Beth Hurt was a renowned American actress. She had made a name for herself both on stage and on screen. It is worth noting that she was a three-time Tony Award-nominated actress. Some of the most notable films that Mary had appeared in include Interiors (1978), According to Garp (1982), The Age of Innocence (1993), and Six Degrees of Separation (1993), to name a few. Now, in a tragic piece of news, it has been revealed that Mary has passed away on Saturday, March 28, 2026.

Mary Beth Hurt dies at 79, know her cause of death 

Hollywood is in a state of mourning after it was revealed that actress, Mary Beth Hurt, best known for her roles in The Age of Innocence and Six Degrees of Separation, has died. According to reports, Mary was 79 years old when she breathed her last at an assisted living facility in Jersey City, New Jersey. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Mary had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease back in 2015. The late actress had been living in another facility in Manhattan until recently. Her husband, Oscar-nominated writer and director, Paul Schrader, was also reportedly living in the same building as Mary, although in a different apartment.

It was Mary's daughter, Molly Schrader, who announced the tragic news of the 3x Tony-nominated actress’s death. As per Deadline, Molly took to her Instagram and wrote, “Yesterday morning we lost my mom, Mary Beth, to Alzheimer's after a decade of long battle with the disease.” She added: 

“She was an actress, a wife, a sister, a mother, an aunt, a friend, and she took on all those roles with grace and a kind ferocity. Although we’re grieving, there is some comfort in knowing she is no longer suffering and is reunited with her sisters in peace.”

Mary Beth Hurt's career and personal life 

Mary Beth Hurt, also known as Mary Berth Supinger, was born in Marshalltown, Iowa, on September 25, 1946. Interestingly, when she was a child, she was babysat by Jean Seberg, a local of her town who later became a symbol of the French New Wave. If a report by the Independent is to be believed, Mary studied drama at the University and at New York University's Tisch School of Arts when she was but a teenager. Years later, in 1971, Mary tied the knot with actor, William Hurt. After nearly a decade of marital bliss, the duo divorced in 1982.

It was in 1974 that Mary first appeared on stage. Soon she became one of the most recognised names on Broadway. To mention, Mary was nominated for a Tony Award three times for her performances in Trelawny of the Wells, Benefactors, and Crimes of the Heart. Four years later, in 1978, Mary made her film debut in Woody Allen's Interiors. For her performance, she was nominated for the BAFTA in the Best Newcomer category.

Among her most memorable roles are ‘Helen Holm Harp' in The World According to Garp (1982) and ‘Regina Beaufort' in Martin Scorsese's The Age of Innocence (1993). For those unaware, in 1995, Mary lent her voice to ‘Seberg’ in Mark Rappaport's documentary, From the Journals of Jean Seberg. Mary's final film appearance came in 2018 with the drama, Change in the Air.

Apart from her stage and film appearances, Mary also had a noteworthy television career. Her first work on TV was for the 1976 film, Ann in Blue. She made a guest appearance on Saturday Night Live in 1992, which was hosted by her friend, Glenn Close. Her last TV appearance was in 2009, in an episode of the hit series, Law & Order.

Coming back to her personal life, Mary married her second husband, filmmaker, Paul Schrader, in 1983. Together, the duo welcomed two children, daughters, Molly and Sam. To mention, in 2023, Paul announced that Mary was placed in a memory care facility owing to her advancing Alzheimer's disease.
