Russell Westbrook is one of the most beloved basketball players. Recently, he left fans heartbroken after announcing his retirement from the NBA. For those unaware, the news comes after Russell had played 18 seasons in the league. He had spent the last season of his career with the rebuilding Sacramento Kings.

The Kings were his seventh team, as he had previously played for the Oklahoma City Thunder, Houston Rockets, Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Clippers, Washington Wizards, and Denver Nuggets. Now, amid Russell’s sudden retirement announcement, fans have become curious to know more about his personal life, especially his wife, Nina Westbrook.

Meet Russell Westbrook’s wife, Nina Westbrook

According to reports, Russell Westbrook's wife, Nina Westbrook, was born on January 16, 1989. She grew up in Southern California. She began playing basketball when she was in high school and also competed in the 4x400 relay and 400m. While she excelled in both sports, Nina ultimately decided to move ahead with basketball.

Nina attended Diamond Ranch High School, after which she received an athletic scholarship to play basketball for the University of California, Los Angeles. There, she played as a forward for the women’s basketball team, with many calling her “one of the fastest players on the team.”

Aside from basketball, Nina also pursued a Bachelor's degree at UCLA and graduated with a minor in English. Following this, Nina went on to get a Master's degree in clinical psychology and now works as a licensed marriage and family therapist. At the time, Russell had gushed about her studious nature in a 2013 interview, saying that she is a “smart girl” and “she knows what she wants to do in life, which is great.”

It is worth mentioning that Nina and Russell first crossed paths in university, as the NBA star also attended UCLA and was part of the men’s basketball team. Russell had played for the UCLA Bruins from 2006 to 2008 before he got drafted to the NBA. During an interview in 2020, Nina claimed that their courtship was filled with playful competition and accused her now-husband of being a cheater. She said:

"The beginning of our relationship was really fun. I had to stop playing him because he became a cheater."

As Russell Westbrook started his professional basketball career in 2008 with the Oklahoma City Thunder, Nina also decided to start a new career and open a boutique called The Little Ark. About a decade later, in 2020, she went on to launch a children's clothing line called Minibrook. She is also the founder of a wellness platform called Bene by Nina that specializes in mental health workshops and provides self-care tips for women. Opening up about how her career was impacted by the fact that she is the wife of an NBA player, she said:

"We lived in multiple states throughout the year, and practicing as a therapist in a traditional sense became very difficult. I decided to shift gears and took that as an opportunity to explore other interests."

On May 16, 2017, Nina and Russell embraced parenthood as they welcomed their first child, a son named Noah. They expanded their family once more in November 2018 when they were blessed with twins, Skye and Jordan. However, Nina’s second pregnancy was a high-risk one. She revealed the same on Instagram, stating that she was grateful for the care that they had. She wrote:

"The reality is that my pregnancy with Skye and Jordyn was high-risk, and we did run into unforeseen complications during delivery, which was really scary. I feel so fortunate that we had the care that we had, but it pains me to know that a woman dies from pregnancy-related causes every 12 hours, and that 60 per cent of those deaths are preventable."
