Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez weighs in on the expensive process involved in egg freezing
Taking to her social media handle, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez spoke about her egg-freezing journey and said it is not easy for her. She pointed out how the right-wing news outlets have quoted her as a secret millionaire, which is far from reality. Speaking about her humble upbringing, Ocasio-Cortez revealed that her dad died when she was a teenager and her mom drove school buses and cleaned houses.
Not only that, but Ocasio-Cortez also revealed that she comes from a working-class family and, until eight years ago, she was waitressing in downtown Manhattan. In the same conversation, Ocasio-Cortez shared that despite getting into politics, she worked really hard to get into the process of egg freezing, as it involved a huge cost.
The Democratic Rep. revealed that for a lot of people, money might not be a problem. But for people like her, finances are a limitation. Elaborating on it, she shared:
“For me, one of the trade-offs that I have made is that I don’t own a house. I saved up to preserve my fertility. And I am lucky to even have been able to do that. For some people and for a lot of places, it can be USD 15,000 to pursue something like this all in. And you have to ask yourself: is it worth it? And that is not the same answer for every person, especially since this is not a guarantee. It also depends on your body. Financially, this is a huge deal.”
She further urged her followers not to trust anything available on the internet and to go through the process if they want biological children. She further mentioned how people with certain body conditions choose egg freezing as they do not want their biological issues to come in their way to having children.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is freezing her eggs and documenting her journey, which she has described as "very daunting". She made the decision to document the process publicly as it is an effort to de-stigmatise the procedure. She also revealed her agenda to normalize the choices women face between their personal and professional lives.
Ocasio-Cortez joins a growing number of American women opting to undertake egg freezing in recent years. Speaking about the same, she shared:
“I want to share this because I was weighing it for a very long time, and there just isn’t a ton out there, and it can feel daunting. We as women are not taught; we are not prepared for our own lives, whether in puberty, pregnancy, or menopause. There need to be more depictions of women having full lives in every context.”
