An ex-CIA officer was caught by FBI officers with more than 300 gold bars worth USD 40 million. Who is he? Here are a few things to know about him!
An ex-CIA officer has been arrested by FBI officers after USD 40 million worth of gold bars were found at his home in Virginia. If the reports are to be believed, he showed 'work-related expenses' and got his hands on the gold to get them, and never returned.
The ex-CIA officer stole the gold from the Federal government, which was found stashed in his home along with millions of US currency and luxury watches from Rolex. The officer who is involved in this has been identified as David Rush, a CIA official with top secret-level clearance. David was charged with criminal theft and was arrested last week, and if the reports are to be believed, he is now waiting for a detention hearing. So, amid this, let's have a look at who he is.
According to AP, David Rush's role was not known, nor was the fact of when he left the agency. On the other hand, the NY Times revealed that he held a senior position at the CIA until very recently. According to the court filings, David Rush was a former executive service-level employee at a United States government agency. A report by the HT revealed that he applied to work with the US Government three times, and it was in 2009 that he got selected. He also reportedly lied about his educational background, as reported.
David Rush mentioned that he was at Clemson University and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and also got a certificate from the US Naval Test Pilot School. According to the reports, David Rush also said he was a Navy pilot and a thesis adviser at the Air Force Institute of Technology. Instead, it was revealed that he was enlisted in the Navy back in 1997 and worked with the US Navy Reserve from 2004 to 2015, after which he was discharged as a lieutenant. Following this, David didn't hone any skills to become a pilot or anything whatsoever, and he didn't even attend any college, as per the affidavit. He kept on lying about his background for reportedly two decades.
David Rush was charged with criminal theft. According to the reports, he inflated his academic credentials and then obtained ten thousand dollars on military leave pay. Reportedly, from November 2025 to March this year, he continuously asked for foreign currency and tens of millions of dollars, while stating that it was needed for work-related expenses.
The investigation is ongoing, and the FBI officials still have no traces of what David's intention was with this amount of money, but a portion of it could reportedly be found in a storage space near his office. While the actual reason behind this isn't known, it's being assumed that the former CIA official might have used the money for personal use, and he knowingly 'embezzled, stole, purloined, or knowingly converted a thing of value of the United States. On May 18, 2026, the FBI raided his home, and a total of 303 gold bars, weighing 1 kg per piece, 35 luxury watches, and USD 2 million in US currency were found in his home.
