The ex-lovers were once very much in love and were briefly engaged before Geena ended the relationship and went on to marry Jeff Goldblum, her second husband.
During a recent interview for the SAG-AFTRA Foundation, McDonald shared the story behind their brief engagement. He said, "The inside story is Geena Davis and I were engaged to be married for about five weeks, and she fell in love with Jeff Goldblum doing her first movie over there in Europe." Even though he was ‘broken’ from the split, he said of Goldblum:
“I don’t blame him. She’s stunningly beautiful and everything like that, but you know what happens on sets, some things happen, but I was broken.”
Later, the ex-lovers reconnected when Davis played McDonald's on-screen wife in the Oscar-winning film Thelma & Louise. Even though they eventually "hugged it out" and now share an amicable bond, Davis' own love life has been anything but smooth. The actress married four times, all to famous men in the industry, but none lasted.

Geena Davis’ Hollywood career spans decades, during which she has achieved multiple accolades. The actress was one of the most cherished icons of her generation, and everyone tried to make a connection with her.
But before Hollywood turned her into a household name, Davis was married to New York restaurateur Richard Emmolo. The couple began dating in 1978 and married in 1981, a year before Davis made her acting debut in Tootsie. The marriage lasted only a few years, and as Davis' acting career began to take off, the couple reportedly drifted apart. They separated in 1983, and their divorce was finalized the following year.
Davis' second marriage remains one of the most talked-about chapters of her romantic history. The actress met Hollywood icon Jeff Goldblum while working together on the 1985 comedy Transylvania 6-5000. Their professional partnership continued with The Fly and Earth Girls Are Easy, blooming into a much-talked-about romance.
Davis and Goldblum tied the knot in 1987, after she broke off her engagement with McDonald. However, the marriage barely lasted a few years before falling apart. Their divorce was finalized in 1991. Looking back decades later, Davis has described the relationship much more warmly than the circumstances of their divorce might suggest. In an interview with PEOPLE, she described the marriage as a "magical chapter in my life," saying it was a joyful era.
"I should have given it more time," she said, reflecting on what she considers one of her biggest marriage regrets. Despite their divorce, the two have remained on friendly terms and reunited publicly at the 2024 SAG Awards.
In 1993, Davis married Finnish director Renny Harlin, just months after the pair began dating. Their relationship was both personal and professional. Harlin directed Davis in Cutthroat Island and The Long Kiss Goodnight. Both films struggled commercially, adding pressure to their relationship. But that marriage ended on a painful note.
In 1997, Davis filed for divorce after discovering that Harlin had fathered a child with her personal assistant. The divorce was finalized in 1998. Years later, Davis described the breakup as deeply painful, saying Harlin had "betrayed me in the worst way possible."
Davis' fourth and longest marriage was to craniofacial surgeon Reza Jarrahy. The couple began dating in 1998 and held a wedding ceremony in 2001. They went on to welcome three children: daughter Alizeh and fraternal twin sons Kaiis and Kian. Davis was 46 when Alizeh was born in 2002 and 48 when her twins arrived in 2004.
Davis and Jarrahy filed for a divorce in 2018, citing "irreconcilable differences" as the legal reason for their separation. However, the case later took a turn when Davis filed a motion to dismiss the case by claiming they were never legally married. During a past appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show, she admitted that she had lied about the marriage being legally valid. After a five-year battle, the divorce was settled in 2021.
