Christina Applegate was hospitalized in L.A. amid her painful battle with Multiple Sclerosis. Besides MS, she suffers from multiple conditions, which she recently shared in her raw memoir.
Christina Applegate has been hospitalized in Los Angeles since late March 2026, and it was only recently that the report became public. Her representatives confirmed the news of her hospitalization without divulging into the specifics of her health condition yet. The news comes after the 54-year-old actress shared a raw, unfiltered glimpse into her life with multiple health conditions, especially her painful battle with Multiple Sclerosis, in her newly released memoir.
While it is not certain whether MS was the reason behind her hospitalization, Applegate's representative told Page Six that she has had a "long history of complicated medical conditions that she has been refreshingly open about, as evidenced in her memoir and on her podcast."
The recent reports have left fans concerned about the Emmy-winning actress's health condition, with curiosity rising about her years-long MS battle. Applegate has spoken candidly about the “hellish” physical impact of MS, often using humor as a way to cope with the challenges of her condition.
Christina Applegate was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) in June 2021 and publicly revealed her condition on August 10 that year. She was 49 at the time and in the middle of filming the final season of Dead to Me. She was diagnosed in 2021, but she later said that she had probably had the disease for six to seven years, at first ignoring early signs like unstable legs and tingling in her toes.
Christina said on her MeSsy podcast that she has been in the hospital more than 30 times since her diagnosis because of serious complications and chronic pain that made it hard for her to do everyday things. Her mobility issues were apparent when she appeared at the Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony in November 2022, where she went barefoot due to balance issues caused by wearing shoes. At the 2024 Emmy Awards, where she received a standing ovation, she used humor to address her changing body, joking that it wasn’t due to Ozempic but the result of MS and steroid treatments.
Ever since her diagnosis with MS, the actress has had over 30 brain lesions, "unimaginable" pain, gastrointestinal issues (chronic vomiting and diarrhea), and even a double kidney infection in 2025, which led her to the hospital. Christina has openly revealed in her podcasts and interviews that she faces severe stomach and digestive issues that force her to urgent hospital visits. Given the severity of her condition, which has affected her immunity, she requires regular medical check-ups.
The Emmy-winning actress, best known for Married… with Children, reflected on the drastic shift in her life following her painful diagnosis. Her condition, Multiple Sclerosis, is a chronic disease where the immune system attacks the protective covering of nerves in the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves, which causes scarring, also known as 'sclerosis'. Unfortunately, there is no cure for MS at the moment, and patients with this condition need to get checked up for flare-ups regularly.
"When I wake up, I often can’t get my arm to move far enough to grab the cup of water by my bed or my phone from its charger... My stomach frequently slows to a halt, leaving me to rush to the emergency room in agony. Most days, simply walking across the room feels like scaling a mountain."
Before her hospitalization in late March 2026, Applegate had spoken about her condition in an interview with PEOPLE. The Friends star shared how, despite her health struggle, she still tries to take her 15-year-old daughter, Sadie, to school and activities, calling it "the only time we have together by ourselves." In her memoir, too, the actress recalled the time when she could play, dance, and play guitar. She wrote:
"I used to be invincible. I loved running. I loved Peloton, I played tennis, and I really loved to dance. I want to pick up the guitar over by the wall, but my hands cramp. I used to love saying to Sadie, my amazing daughter, 'Yes, of course I’ll take you wherever you want to go in the car.' Now, I often can’t drive her anywhere."
While Christina tries her best to be optimistic and speak about her condition with brutal honesty, her condition takes a toll on her mental health, which just can't be denied. For an actress like her, who was once known for her energy and vibrant screen presence, seeing the world shrink around her bed most of the time makes it extremely difficult to maintain a positive front.
The actress, who previously battled breast cancer in 2008 and underwent a double mastectomy, shared in her memoir that while that episode was scary, she survived after getting the cancer removed. But with her current condition, there is no option but to face the pain. With MS, Christina shared her fears about what lies ahead for her in the memoir, saying:
"With the cancer, it was taken out of my body, and I was able to move on. But MS is my constant companion. In fact, I will probably go away because of it. It scares me to death. I don’t want to dance with this pain anymore, and I don’t want to be in the predicament I’m in. Everything about it sucks."
As Christina Applegate continues to face her health battles with brutal honesty, her journey has been both painful and inspiring for her fans suffering from similar conditions. Praying for her speedy recovery.
