Add BollywoodShaadis on GoogleActor Martin Short has faced several devastating personal losses throughout his life. The Only Murders in the Building star has navigated profound grief after the deaths of his wife of three decades, Nancy Dolman and their daughter, Katherine Short. The actor also went through a similar phase in his childhood when his eldest brother, David passed away in a car accident, leaving the 12-year-old Martin behind.
David's death was followed by the deaths of his parents, when Martin was in his teens. Such family tragedies left Martin heartbroken; however, he revealed that he never took therapy for the same. The 76-year-old has reportedly been in a better mental space since allegedly dating actress Meryl Streep.
All about Meryl Streep and Martin Short's rumoured relationship
Actors Meryl Streep and Martin Short have been friends for a long time. They reportedly transitioned their decade-long friendship to a romance while filming Season 3 of Only Murders in the Building, in 2023. Notably, it was over a decade after the death of his beloved wife, Nancy Dolman, in 2010. Meryl and Martin first met in February 2015 backstage at the Broadway show It's Only a Play, in which he was starring.
At that time, Martin was a widower, and she was married to sculptor Don Gummer. Thus, no romantic connection was built between Martin and Meryl at their first meeting. Since then, for years, the duo moved in similar social circles and were occasionally photographed together at events, such as the 2017 AFI Life Achievement Award Gala. It was only after Meryl's divorce in 2023 that rumours of The Prom star's romance with Martin started making rounds.

The speculation was sparked by their numerous high-profile outings. In August 2024, Martin and Meryl were seen holding hands at the Only Murders in the Building Season 4 premiere. They also sat together at the 2024 Golden Globes, which heightened the romance rumours. Additionally, the duo attended multiple Broadway shows together and were featured in a March 2025 Saturday Night Live episode.
In the years 2023-25, Martin Short and The Devil Wears Prada fame were frequently linked, and at one point he decided to react to the speculation. In mid 2024, his representatives denied the dating rumours, stating that they were "just very good friends" and "not a couple." However, in March 2025, Page Six reported that Meryl and Martin had moved beyond friendship and were happy as "boyfriend and girlfriend," but claimed that they have no plans to marry.
Sources close to Martin and Meryl alleged that their respective families and children "absolutely approve" of their relationship and find them "adorable" together. However, when asked about his thoughts of remarriage, he always stated that he could no longer tread that path again, as in his heart, the late Nancy Dolman was his forever wife.
Martin Short opted for staying away from therapy despite immense grief of multiple family losses

During an August 2026 interview with IndieWire, Martin Short revealed that even after facing devastating losses of his parents, brother, wife and daughter, he never opted for therapy. He shared that it was definitely hard to cope with the grief; however, his friends and remaining family helped him during the low phase. Talking about their contribution in his life, Martin mentioned:
"When loss and grief suddenly or subtly [encompass] your life, it's your friends and family that help you through and remind you of the journey. So, you find the light."
