Ariana Grande has been in the public eye for most of the past year. Between releasing new music, going on tour around the world, and navigating a highly-publicized breakup with Ethan Slater, it’s been hard to miss the singer. And after months of non-stop attention, Grande is ready to step out of the spotlight when her Eternal Sunshine tour concludes.

Grande's decision came as a shock to her fans, with many speculating whether her seemingly declining health had played a role. Now, sources close to the singer have revealed the real reason.

Ariana Grande pulls back from the spotlight after relentless public scrutiny

The Grammy winner recently confirmed she will be taking "a step back from visibility" following the conclusion of her tour on September 1, 2026, ending months of speculation after she also exited the upcoming West End revival of Sunday in the Park with George.

The announcement comes amid renewed public discussion surrounding Grande's appearance following the release of her Petal music video, with fans once again debating her weight across social media. But reports say her decision followed years of intense attention surrounding both her personal life and physical appearance.

A representative for the singer told People that she plans to finish the tour "healthily and happily" before taking "a much-deserved break from public-facing work and appearances," adding that the constant public scrutiny had become overwhelming.

Sources also told Page Six that although Grande loved performing on the Eternal Sunshine tour, she had been working nonstop and had long struggled with the level of public commentary surrounding her. One insider emphasized the "nonstop public scrutiny" despite being in a "really good place on tour." However, another said the 33-year-old simply reached a point where self-priority was well-deserved. The insider said:

"She’s been working nonstop for a long time and finally got to a point where she realized she needed to give herself permission to step back for a while. She’ll be spending time with her family and friends, with loved ones, and just enjoying some well-deserved downtime."

The renewed conversation intensified after the release of the Petal music video, where social media users commented on Grande's appearance. While some expressed concern, others defended the singer, urging people to stop speculating about her body.

Ariana Grande breaks silence about her decision to take a break

Amid growing concerns about the singer's health, Ariana Grande herself cleared the air about her decision. During her recent concert in Chicago, she paused her performance to directly address the audience, clarifying that the decision had been made long before the recent headlines. She told the audience:

"So basically, the announcement that was made yesterday was not a reactive or impulsive thing. It is something that I had decided to plan... from a thoughtful and empowered place."

She also reassured fans that the online negativity wasn't dictating her choices. Instead, Grande said the hiatus is about establishing healthy boundaries after years of nonstop work. The singer directly addressed the speculations and said:

"I heard that my fans were worried that negativity was ruining things for me, but that could not be more the opposite. Boundaries, they need to be set. Human beings can need a break sometimes."

For now, Ariana Grande intends to complete the remaining dates of her Eternal Sunshine tour before stepping away from public appearances for an indefinite period. And her official withdrawal from the West End production of Sunday in the Park with George means she will no longer reunite on stage with Wicked co-star Jonathan Bailey next summer.

A source close to the singer said there is no fixed timeline for her return and that she simply wants to spend time with family, friends and loved ones after an intense few years balancing music, touring and acting.

Although Grande is taking a break from the spotlight, fans will still see her on the big screen later this year in Focker-in-Law, the latest installment of the Meet the Parents franchise.
