Sushmita Sen is a force to be reckoned with. The 48-year-old Bollywood diva has proved that she is not only a talented actress but also an excellent human being. Sushmita rose to prominence after she won the Miss Universe pageant in 1994. She then stepped into Bollywood with the 1996 thriller, Dastak, and went on to cement her name in the industry with several other blockbusters. However, she took a hiatus from acting and returned to the screens in 2020 with the web series, Aarya.
There is not an iota of doubt that Sushmita Sen is one of the best-looking, well-poised, and well-spoken actresses in today’s time. Time and again, she has proved that no one in the industry is as classy, gracious and elegant as she is, and once again, she has proven it. We recently stumbled upon a clip from Sushmita’s past interviews, where she is seen talking about the adoption process and the difficulties she faced while adopting her daughter, Renee.

Upon digging further, we found out that the clip is from a one-on-one conversation that the former Miss Universe had with the author-actress, Twinkle Khanna. The duo engaged in hearty conversations about their personal and professional lives on the show, The Icons, on Tweak India’s YouTube channel. Twinkle asked Sushmita about her motherhood journey and questioned what made her decide to become a mother at such a young age. Sushmita then recalled her time as Miss Universe and said that it used to break her heart when she used to visit adoption centres just to take pictures, hence she decided to adopt. She further added about the challenges she faced during the process and said:
“So, at that point I'm not thinking I'll be 46 and single. I am thinking I will get married you know so then I have to worry about all of this why is this so hard? It's incredible both my kids they changed by virtue of just coming into my life, they changed so many orthodox laws in India. It wasn't like ‘ki maine ye kiya aap bhi kijiye’, it was just something that I knew I had to do and to do that, my last president was a 29-year-old divorced woman who was allowed adoption single but divorced I am applying 21, never been married fertile all of these are a problem, and they would obviously fight.”
Further into the conversation, the former Miss Universe highlighted her fight in the High Court for the adoption of her first daughter, Renee. She said that her daughter was given to her under foster care, and after six months the court hearing took place. Sushmita mentioned that if the honourable court found the party unfit to take care of the child, then the kid was immediately to be taken away from the adopted parent/s.
When the actress turned 24 years old, her matter came up in court, and the judge said to Sushmita Sen that they were both going to be responsible for Renee if the latter didn't do her job well. She then recalled the moment when the judge had a conversation with her father, Subir Sen, and mentioned that the actress’ marriage and her life would be impacted by this decision. However, Sushmita Sen’s father’s reply to this question is very heart-touching. He said:
“No father will be okay with that your honour. But what I know for sure is we haven't raised her to be her only identity to be someone's wife, she's chosen this motherhood and the one thing I know my daughter to do is to follow through, she will follow through, and she has my support, she has her mother, she has the family. Give us Renee.”

Towards the end of their conversation, Twinkle Khanna asked the former pageant winner if the judge’s conversation with her father during the adoption process of Renee was the reason behind her not getting married yet. Sushmita said that after she adopted her first daughter, any man who came into her life, knew that her child was her first priority and there were no two opinions about it. She further mentioned that she never wanted someone to come into her life and share her daughters’ responsibilities. She said:
“Luckily I've met some very interesting men in my life. The only reason I never got married is because they were a letdown, it had nothing to do with my kids. My kids were never in the equation if at all I think they've been very gracious, both my kids, they have accepted people in my life with open arms never made a face and given everybody an equal measure of love and respect. I got came close to getting married thrice, all three times God saved me I can't tell you what disasters followed over there uh with their respective lives, but yeah God did protect me I think also because God is protecting these two kids he can't let me get into a messy affair.”
