Sridevi was the hawa hawai and had millions of hearts beating for her. She was one of the finest actresses in Bollywood and it is said that people like her are made rare. While many actors were dying to be with her, Sridevi had found love in producer, Boney Kapoor, who was already married. The fire of love was from both ends and Boney Kapoor had done everything in his power to impress Sridevi and had ensured that his heroine felt comfortable on the set. When vanity vans and personal assistants were unheard of, Boney had arranged an exclusive van for Sridevi.
It isn’t a secret that Sridevi had an affair with the much-married Boney Kapoor and she had also gotten pregnant before marriage. Back in those days, she was accused of being a ‘home-breaker’. From being friends with Boney Kapoor’s first wife, Mona Shourie Kapoor to becoming her sautan, Sridevi and Boney Kapoor’s love story has seen many phases and has always been the talk of the town.
Here is the roller coaster ride of Sridevi and Boney Kapoor’s affair!
Boney Kapoor was smitten by Sridevi the very first moment he had seen her in the late 70s in a Tamil film. At the India Today Woman Summit 2013, Boney Kapoor had talked about his favourite topic, his love story with Sridevi and had shared how he had gotten to know about Sri and how they had met. Starting with the first time he had seen Sridevi, Boney Kapoor had said:
"It happened the first time I saw her on screen, this was probably in the late 70s, when I saw one of her Tamil films. I said to myself that this is someone I would want to have in my film."
Boney Kapoor was so impressed with Sridevi that he had went to meet her and was impressed with her broken Hindi and English. He had said:
"I went up to her set, met her. When I met her, it was almost like a dream come true. You know, she is an introvert and doesn't communicate very easily with strangers, and I was a stranger at that point of time. The few words that she spoke in broken Hindi and broken English, they touched me and moved me, and I got more curious to know her."
Boney Kapoor was adamant to sign Sridevi for Shekhar Kapur’s movie, Mr India and even paid her more than what her mother had demanded. Sridevi’s mother was her manager and had demanded 10 lakh for the film, however, Boney Kapoor had offered 11 lakhs for the role. He had added:
"Sri was the highest paid actor, among the females. I knew she had done a film for around Rs 8-8.5 lakh, and probably, this was her mother's way of negotiating. I heard her figure and I said 'No, I'll pay Rs 11 lakh.' She thought I was a mad producer from Bombay who is offering more than what she asked for! Well, that's how I got close to her mother."
When the film, Mr India had gone on floors, Boney Kapoor had started making his move to impress Sridevi. To pamper Sridevi, Boney Kapoor had arranged best make-up room, costumes and ensured that she felt comfortable on sets and get whatever she wanted. Every time Boney Kapoor met Sridevi, he was getting more and more affected by her and he had realised that he was head over heels in love with her.
Boney Kapoor had always wanted Sridevi to realise that he would be there for her and gradually, she too had begun reciprocating his love. Boney had shared at the India Today Woman Summit 2013:
"She saw that this man is too persistent and perhaps realised that I was sincere and not looking for a fling. Somehow, things fell in place."
Boney Kapoor had stood like a rock with Sridevi and her family when her father had passed away and it brought them closer even more. In an old interview, Sridevi had also talked about her love story with Boney Kapoor and had said:
"Boney came to me in 1984 to sign me to play Seema, the lead female role for Mr India. He confessed later, that he fell in love with me outright! He, however, did take a few years to sort out his life before formally proposing to me in 1993."
Sridevi had further shared that when she got to know him, she had fallen in love. Her sister was shocked by her decision, but she had followed her heart. She had added:
"I fell in love with him when I got to know the real him. It was difficult, traumatic even and it took me many years to finally accept the fact that I was destined to be with Boney. In hindsight, I only wish that I had realised and accepted his love for me sooner. I always believe in following my heart and I am glad that I did. My parents had passed away by then and my sister was shocked with my decision. But now, she shares a great relationship with my husband and is convinced that he is the best thing that ever happened to me!"
Sridevi was linked with many A-list actors of Bollywood at that time. The amusing fact was that they all were married and Sridevi had once said that she will not be someone's second wife ever.
In the 80s, superstars, Sridevi and Mithun Chakraborty were reported to be madly in love with each other. It was also reported that the two had secretly gotten hitched with one another. The duo had apparently felt attracted towards each other on the sets of Jaag Utha Insan (1984) and this had led to the rise of an affair. Mithun was already married to Yogeeta Bali and was finding it difficult to choose between the two ladies. If rumours are to be believed, Sridevi had even tied a rakhi on Boney Kapoor’s wrist to end all the doubts from Mithun’s mind about her relationship with Boney. Tired of being the second woman, Sridevi had given an ultimatum to Mithun, but Yogeeta was hell-bent on not leaving her husband and had reportedly attempted suicide. That’s when Mithun had thought of cutting all ties with Sridevi and she went on to marry producer Boney Kapoor.
Sridevi was linked to her co-star, Jeetendra after they had worked together in the films, Himmatwalla, Jaani Dost and Justice Choudhary. After the success of Himmatwalla the romance stories between Sridevi and Jeetendra were doing the rounds. It was also said that they were staying in the same room and in a 1984 interview, Sridevi had opened up about the rumours and had said:
“Never! Honestly, till this day, I have never been to Jeetu’s hotel room, nor has he ever come home. I know people have been saying a lot of bad things, but this is the truth.I am an innocent girl. I’m not a fool, but I am not a calculative person either. And I am certainly not a man-eater.”
In fact, Sridevi had also mentioned that she will not marry a married man or will never be someone's second wife. She had added:
"It's a wrong belief that second wives are a common feature in the South. Even here, it's a big thing to marry a married man or have a second wife. Everyone gossips about it. People are more conservative in the South than in Bombay.”
Boney Kapoor was married to Mona Shourie Kapoor when he had fallen in love with Sridevi. Mona was a producer and entrepreneur. Boney Kapoor and Mona Shourie had tied the knot in the year 1983 after falling in love with each other. Mona was 19 when she had married Boney Kapoor, who was 10 years older than her. However, his affair with Sridevi broke their happily married life and he had left his wife, Mona and two kids for Sridevi. Mona was shattered with the advancements, and in an interview with DNA had said:
"He (Boney) was 10 years older to me. I was 19 when I married him. So I literally grew up with him. Ours was a 13-year-old marriage. So it came as a shock when I realised that my husband was in love with somebody else... There was nothing left in the relationship to give it a chance because Sridevi was already with a child."
Boney Kapoor and Mona Kapoor never really divorced and were separated in 1996 because of Sridevi. In a 1997 story of Stardust, it was mentioned that Sridevi was quite pissed with the fact that Mona is Boney Kapoor’s legally wedded wife and she continues to be his mistress even after the wedding. According to reports, Mona and Sridevi were friends and the actress used to stay at their house and consider Boney as her brother. Later, an affair had started between Sridevi and Boney and soon she was pregnant with Boney’s child. It was on March 25, 2012, that Mona Kapoor had breathed her last due to multiple organ failure after battling cancer and hypertension in the presence of her kids.
Boney Kapoor and Mona Kapoor have two kids. After marriage in 1983, the couple was blessed with a son, Arjun Kapoor on June 26, 1985, and a daughter, Anushla Kapoor on December 29, 1990. While Arjun Kapoor is a known actor in Bollywood, Anshula kept herself away from the limelight and has worked with various organisations like Habitat for Humanities, Google, Exceed Entertainment and Hrithik Roshan's fitness brand, HRX. Arjun Kapoor had made his acting debut with the film, Ishaqzaade in 2012 a few months after his mother’s death. Mona Kapoor had taken her last breath on March 25, 2012, and her son, Arjun's first film had released on May 11, 2012.
Boney Kapoor and Sridevi had tied the knot on June 2, 1996, as she was pregnant before the wedding. Boney and Sridevi had an age difference of almost 8 years. In the author, Satyarth Nayak’s book, Sridevi, The Eternal Screen Goddess, which is based on the actress’ life, he mentioned that as Boney was already married and had two children, Sridevi had to give up on her dream of a lavish wedding. The couple had a simple temple wedding. According to reports, after his wedding with Sridevi, Boney Kapoor had taken his kids, Arjun Kapoor and Anshula Kapoor for a picnic, which had upset the actress a lot. There was a verbal war between Sridevi and Mona Kapoor as the actress had banned Boney from meeting his first family. He was asked to cut off all his ties with Mona, and Anshula. This is a major reason that Arjun never shared a warm relationship with his stepmother.
Yes, Sridevi was pregnant with Boney Kapoor’s child before their wedding. The couple had welcomed their first child, a baby girl on March 6, 1997, whom they had named Janhvi Kapoor. Later, on November 5, 2000, Sridevi and Boney Kapoor were blessed with another daughter, whom they had named Khushi Kapoor. Well, Janhvi had made her debut in Bollywood in 2018 with the film, Dhadak, which had released a few months after her mother, Sridevi’s death. Janhvi's debut movie had released on June 20, 2018, whereas, her mother, Sridevi had died on February 24, 2018. She is a known actress in Bollywood. On the other hand, Khushi Kapoor is preparing herself for her big Bollywood debut.
Sridevi had passed away on February 24, 2018, because of accidental drowning in a bathtub in her hotel room in Dubai. She had gone there with her family to attend her nephew, Mohit Marwah’s wedding with Antara Motiwala. Her death had come as a shock for the entire nation and everyone was worried about her daughter, Janhvi and Khushi as these three ladies were inseparable. It was then that Arjun Kapoor and Anushla Kapoor had come forward to stand like a pillar of support for their step-sisters, mending their relationship forever.
After performing the last rites of Sridevi in Rameshwaram, Boney Kapoor had tweeted:
“Losing a friend, wife and mother of your two daughters is a loss inexplicable in words... I am blessed to have the support and love of Arjun and Anshula, who have been such pillars of strength for myself, Khushi and Janhvi. Together, as a family, we have tried to face this unbearable loss. To the world, she was their Chandni... the actor par excellence... their Sridevi... but to me, she was my love, my friend, mother to our girls... my partner. To our daughters, she was their everything... their life. She was the axis around which our family ran."
His tweet had further stated:
“As we bid goodbye to my beloved wife and Khushi & Janhvi’s mama, I have a sincere request. Please respect our need to grieve privately. If you need to talk of Sri, let it be of the special memories that connect each of you to her. She was and is an actor that is irreplaceable. Love and respect her for that. My only concern at this time is to protect my daughters and find a way to move forward without Sri. She was our life, our strength and the reason we always smiled. We love her beyond measure. Rest in peace my love. Our lives will never be the same again.”
Boney Kapoor is a film producer and has invested in films like Mr India, No Entry, Judaai and Wanted. His net worth is estimated to be around $50 million, which converts to Rs 353.9 crores.
Sridevi might be called a ‘home breaker’ but she was a caring wife and wonderful MOM. The love that Boney Kapoor and Sridevi had for each other, had survived the test of time and emerged victoriously. Even though Sridevi had left Boney Kapoor heartbroken, ending their journey together, their love story will be cherished and heard for years to come.
