When Sania Mirza Called Off Engagement With Universal Bakers' Owner Before Marrying Shoaib Malik

When Dr. Otis Milburn said, “There are seven billion people on the planet, and one of them is gonna climb up on a moon for you.”, we wondered if this happens only in fiction or in real life too? And then tennis sensation, Sania Mirza proved that one can always go the extra mile for the sake of love. The gorgeousness had erased geographical boundaries and religious differences when she dared to marry Pakistani cricketer, Shoaib Malik on April 12, 2010. The whole nation was shocked yet delighted to see the two strong athletes together as husband and wife.

But unfortunately, their divorce rumours have been floating around the internet from a long time. And according to multiple reports, Sania caught Shoaib cheating on her, which led to their separation. However, before tying the knot with Shoaib, Sania was engaged to the owner of Universal Baker, Sohrab Mirza. They had been friends since childhood, and their parents had been close for three generations. Sania and Sohrab were all set to make it to the aisle, but they couldn’t, due to some differences.

In a 2010 interview with The Times Of India, Sohrab Malik had revealed that he knew his engagement with Sania Mirza would break soon. Calling it a mutual decision to engage and a heart-wrenching yet shared decision to part ways, he had said:

"It was a mutual decision to get engaged and we mutually decided to part ways even though it hurts. But, you have to move on."

Further, in the same conversation, Sohrab stated that though they had been friends for the past six years, it was only after their engagement that they noticed incompatibility between each other. Their marriage was on the cards, but unfortunately, they didn’t make it to the aisle. He had said:

"Differences between us cropped up right from the word go. After the engagement, we realised we were completely incompatible although we had known each other for around six years and our families have been friends for three generations. The broken engagement didn't come out of the blue. I saw it coming!"

He also cleared the air and mentioned if Sania’s immense stardom was a problem for Sohrab’s family. He said that Sania might be a celebrity to the outside world, but she was a simple girl for him, and he was super proud of her. Sohrab added that Sania’s fame had never hurt his ego because he was from a business background and she was from sports. In his words:

“She was a celebrity for the world, but for me she was a simple girl. She has worked so hard to achieve what she has and I'm proud of her achievements. But, I also run a decent business, so there was no competition between us."

In fact, there were also rumours floating that Sohrab’s family had asked Sania to leave her tennis career after marriage. However, Sania’s father did not agree to their terms and didn’t want his daughter to sacrifice her career for love. Hence, misunderstandings grew between the two families, and they ended up calling off the engagement.

Eventually, Sania found the love of her life, Shoaib Malik and got married to him in a lavish wedding. Together, they have a son named Izhaan Mirza Malik.
