For the first time in the history of the United Kingdom, a politician of the Indian-origin will sit on the Prime Minister's chair, and the historic win broke too many records. The leader of the Conservative Party in the United Kingdom, Rishi Sunak is 42 years old, and after his win, he became the youngest PM in Britain's history. As soon as it was revealed that Rishi Sunak was soon going to take the oath as the Prime Minister of Britain, millions of his supporters around the world showered immense love on him.
The citizens of the United Kingdom are quite excited about Rishi Sunak's reign as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. On the internet, we have already seen many politicians lending him their support and best wishes. However, in the midst of all this, a series of past controversies of Rishi Sunak have made their way into the headlines all over again. However, before we jump into his controversial life, let's take a quick tour of his personal life and the much-discussed Indian origin.
Starting with Rishi Sunak's parents, the Prime Minister's father, Yashvir Sunak was a National Health Service General practitioner in the UK, while his mother, Usha Sunak was also a pharmacist, who ran a chemist shop. The PM hails from a humble background, which is one of the many reasons why so many people admire him across the globe. It was in 2009 when Rishi Sunak had got married to Akshata Murthy, daughter of Indian multi-billionaire and the Founder of Infosys, N.R. Narayana Murthy.
The couple is blessed with two daughters, Krishna Sunak and Anoushka Sunak. Now, without further ado, let's just jump on the list of some of the most talked-about controversies of the UK's Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak's life!
In BBC's documentary, Middle Classes: Their Rise and Sprawl, Rishi Sunak had unfolded a lot of pages from his personal life. However, the one revelation that had kept this documentary alive in the minds of every British citizen was the comments he made about his friend circle. When Rishi Sunak was asked to share some details of his friend circle, the now-Prime Minister of Britain clearly stated that he had no friends from the working class. The statement had brought immense backlash to politicians from across the country. In his words:
"I have friends who are aristocrats, I have friends who are upper-class, I have friends who are, you know, working class. Well, not working class."
One of the biggest controversies of Rishi Sunak's life was when he increased the tax burden on the public, as people speculated that he had done that in order to benefit his family in the tax deductions. For the unversed, Akshata is the daughter of tech-giant, Infosys's Founder, Narayana Murthy but doesn't hold citizenship of India after her marriage to Rishi. However, she was still reportedly paying 30,000 pounds per year in order to maintain her non-domicile status in the UK.
Well, the benefit of a non-domicile status is that Akshata Murthy doesn't pay taxes on her income in the foreign land, India. But, after a huge outrage by the public and constant pressure from the media, Rishi Sunak's wife dropped her non-domicile status.
The Russia-Ukraine war divided the entire world into two parties, and the respective sides made several decisions. When it comes to the UK, Rishi Sunak had urged every single firm in the country to stop investing in Russian companies. Not only this, the politician had also praised companies like B.P. and Shell for pulling out their investments in the Russian market.
However, the appeal had fired back at Rishi Sunak, after people started accusing his wife, Akshata Murthy, of collecting her dividends from her father, Narayana Murthy's company, Infosys, who was actively working in Russia. It was a complicated situation for Rishi and his wife, Akshata, as the people of Britain had started accusing them of collecting 'blood money' from Russia, who was in an active war with Ukraine at that time.
According to multiple reports, Rishi Sunak had served as a Chancellor in the United Kingdom before becoming the Prime Minister and was reportedly holding a green card. For the unversed, a green card allows a person to work and live in the UK permanently. However, if the reports are to be believed, Rishi Sunak reportedly received many tax benefits as he was a green card holder.
Earlier this year, a clip of Rishi Sunak making a payment at a store had gone viral on the internet. In the much-viral clip, Rishi could be seen purchasing a coca-cola can and trying to pay with a contactless card. However, he needed help to be able to use it, which had given a massive opportunity to some people, who wasted no time in trolling him for not knowing how to make a contactless payment. While some people voiced their opinions in his favour, many were left in splits.
So many people's hopes are on the shoulders of the United Kingdom's Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, and it will be interesting to see whether he will be true to his promises during his reign or not.
