Do you remember the song, Main Yahaan Hoon featuring Shah Rukh Khan and Preity Zinta in Veer Zaara and the beautiful white palace, where many pivotal scenes of the film were shot? Have you seen Saif Ali Khan’s one of the most controversial web series, Tandav? Or the Hollywood film, Eat Pray Love starring Julia Roberts, and Bollywood movies, Rang De Basanti and Mere Brother Ki Dulhan? Now that you have recalled, can you guess what is common in these films and web series? They were shot at Saif Ali Khan’s ancestral home, the magnificent Pataudi Palace that is spread across 10 acres in Haryana’s Pataudi.
To give you a brief about the Pataudi Palace, it is also known as Ibrahim Kothi and was passed on from the last ruling Nawab, Iftikhar Ali Khan to his son, Mansoor Ali Khan, who was the last recognized titular Nawab. The Palace is now held by Saif Ali Khan as his ancestral property and the family often comes and lives life king size in the Pataudi which has also become their holiday home. The Pataudi Palace is spread across 10 acres and has 150 rooms, including seven dressing rooms, seven bedrooms, seven billiard rooms, as well as palatial drawing rooms and dining rooms. As per a SpotboyE report, the Pataudi Palace was estimated to be worth Rs 800 crores as in 2020.
In an interview with Forbes, when Saif Ali Khan was asked, “Which is your favourite space in the Pataudi Palace?” he retorted, “I do not feel more at home anywhere else than at the Pataudi Palace. Every place else, somehow, feels rented and temporary. We have had many events here when the entire family–all the parents and kids–have gotten together, and these are some of my fondest memories in the place. From the middle of the palace, from an open chhabutra, you can see the moon and that is my favourite spot to sit in and look at the moon and the stars. My second favourite space is the library. Sometime ago, I renovated the palace and added some personal touches to it." Revealing his regret of not being able to spend more than ten days a year at the Palace, Saif continued, "Sadly though, I don’t end up spending more than ten days a year here and hence opened it for more shoots.”
When Soha Ali Khan had visited her ancestral home, Pataudi palace in November 2019 with hubby, Kunal Kemmu and their daughter, Inaaya Naumi Kemmu, the actress had paid a visit to her abba, Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi’s grave. Sharing a picture from the same with her daughter, Inaaya, Soha had written, “Wish you were here.” The inscription of the gravestone could be read as “Mohammad Mansoor Ali Khan, The Nawab of Pataudi 1941-2011 Love me when I am dead and do not let me die.”
To celebrate Sharmila Tagore’s birthday in 2019, Saif Ali Khan, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Soha Ali Khan, Kunal Kemmu, Taimur Ali Khan and Inaaya Naumi Kemmu had headed off to the Pataudi Palace. Kunal had clicked beautiful pictures of Saif and Kareena from their winter nights at the Pataudi Palace and they were indeed a sight to behold. Twinning in off-white winter outfits, Saif and Kareena couldn’t take their eyes off each other in the pictures. Kunal had captioned the pictures as “My camera just loves these two. And so do I! Saif & Kareena #khemsterclick #nightshot #aboutlastnight #fire #firelight #firelighting #love.”
When Taimur Ali Khan had turned 4 on December 20, 2020, Kareena Kapoor Khan had posted a video, comprising of some beautiful moments of her little bundle of joy from their vacations, Mumbai home and Pataudi Palace. Kareena had captioned her post as “My child... I’m happy at four you have such determination, dedication and focus on what you want to do... which is now picking up the haystack and feeding the cow... God bless you my hardworking boy... but on the way, don’t forget to taste the snow, pluck flowers, jump up and down, climb trees and ofcourse eat all your cake... Chase your dreams and keep your chin up my boy... but above all else... do everything in your life that makes you smile. No one can or ever will love you more than your Amma. Happy Birthday Son... My Tim.”
