When Saif Ali Khan Revealed He Had Paid 5 Crore Alimony To Ex-Wife Amrita Singh Post Divorce In 2004

While Bollywood films make us believe in fairytale love and happy endings, the real-life of celebrities prove that 'happily ever after' isn’t meant for everyone, and sometimes, a relationship is not just meant to be. We have seen big fat weddings of the B-town costing a bomb for the celebrities, but over the years, we have also seen their separations, which had burnt a big hole in their pockets proving that even heartbreaks are expensive.

With this article, let’s take a recap of the time when Saif Ali Khan was granted a divorce from his now ex-wife, Amrita Singh and he had revealed the alimony he had to give her.

Saif Ali Khan and Amrita Singh had met on the sets of Rahul Rawail’s film and the former was so smitten by his co-star that he decided to ask her out for dinner a couple of days later. On their first dinner date, Saif had a good time with Amrita and in his own words, he got to know her better.

Saif and Amrita had not only talked about their personal and professional lives, but the night ended with a kiss. So began the story of Saif and Amrita’s tumultuous love. It was in 1991 when they tied the knot, but unfortunately, it ended with separation in the year 2004. 13 years and two kids later, Saif and Amrita had mutually decided to end their marriage and were granted the divorce in 2004.

But the divorce had left Saif Ali Khan disturbed and he had revealed that he would cry looking at his children, Sara Ali Khan and Ibrahim Ali Khan’s photos that he had kept in his wallet. In a 2005 interview with the Telegraph, Saif had revealed the alimony he had paid to his ex-wife, Amrita Singh. He was quoted as saying,

"I'm supposed to give Amrita Rs 5 crore, of which I've already given her approximately Rs 2.5 crore. Also, I'm paying Rs 1 lakh per month until my son becomes 18. I'm not Shah Rukh Khan. I don't have that kind of money. I've promised her I'll pay up the rest of the money, and I will, even if I've to slog till I drop dead."

Speaking of how he was saving for their kids, Saif had continued,

"Whatever I've earned from doing ads, stage shows and films are being given for my children. I've no money. Our bungalow is for Amrita and the kids, and never mind the relatives who've joined her after my departure." He had concluded, "I want no confrontation with Amrita. She was, and will remain, an integral part of my life. I want her and my kids to be happy."

However, over the years, Saif Ali Khan and Amrita Singh have moved on in their respective lives. While Saif had married Kareena Kapoor in 2012, Amrita is happily raising her and Saif’s children, Sara Ali Khan and Ibrahim Ali Khan. And everyone has happily come to terms with the ‘modern’ relationships of the family and share a warm camaraderie with one another.

Proof of this was seen in 2012 when Amrita made sure Sara and Ibrahim looked their best for their abba, Saif’s wedding with Kareena. For the wedding, while Ibrahim had twinned with Saif in a matching coloured sherwani, Sara had looked radiant in a neon green and pink anarkali, which she had accentuated with a maang teeka, diamond set and bangles.

Years later, when Saif Ali Khan appeared with his daughter, Sara Ali Khan on Koffee With Karan, he revealed that before his wedding with Kareena Kapoor in 2012, he had written a letter to his ex-wife, Amrita Singh. Elaborating on the same, Saif had recalled,

“When I was getting married to Kareena, for some reason before going down, I wrote a note to Amrita and I said, “This is a new chapter starting and we’ve had our history and everything. Something on the lines of good wishes I hope for both of us.”

Before sending it to Amrita, Saif had sent the letter to Kareena and had asked for her thoughts. Saif continued,

“I sent it to Kareena and said have a look at this, if it’s okay, I am thinking of sending it across. And she was like that’s really nice. I sent it across and then Sara called me and said, “You know I was coming anyway, but now I am coming with a happy heart even more.” That story sums up the attitude of everyone involved.”

In a 2020 interview with Pinkvilla, Saif Ali Khan had spoken about his divorce with Amrita Singh and how they had broken the news to their kids, Sara Ali Khan and Ibrahim Ali Khan. Revealing how the divorce impacted the kids, Saif had said,

“It's the worst thing in the world. It's something that I still feel I wish it could be different. I don't think I will really be okay with it ever. There are certain things that can't be, and I try and make peace with them and myself by saying that I was 20 and quite young. So many changes. You like to think of parents together, but they are individual units too. So, everyone can be okay with a modern relationship also. No child should be deprived of a warm home. You have to make the most of whatever situation you are in. Life is beautiful and nobody can be sitting around, complaining too much. Sometimes, having two parents together might not be the best thing for anyone. A nice stable home is a wonderful environment and that's what you would like to share with your kids."
