Mallika Sherawat is the epitome of self-love, bold looks, unfiltered conversations and unconventional choices. However, she was not always like that. Before Mallika became the person fans have grown to love, she was Reema Lamba, a normal girl from Moth, a small village in Hisar district of Haryana. And like any other parents, her parents also wanted her to settle down.
Mallika Sherawat also agreed to settle down and tied the knot with the Jet Airways pilot, Karan Singh Gill, when she was just 21 years old. While the couple had a love marriage, their relationship didn't last long, as they parted ways after Mallika decided to pursue her dream and enter the glamour world.
While Mallika Sherawat became one of the most famous and loved actresses in the industry, her ex-husband remained out of the limelight. The actress never shared what happened to Karan Singh Gill following their divorce. Nonetheless, reports have alleged that he continued to work as a pilot and eventually gave marriage another chance. However, no further information is available on him.
What led to Mallika Sherawat and Karan Singh Gill's divorce?
While Mallika Sherawat has maintained a dignified silence about that chapter of her life, it was her uncle, Sushil Lamba, who opened up about her past in a 2009 conversation with Stardust. He revealed that the couple were initially friends. However, soon love bloomed between them, and they decided to tie the knot.
He shared that the "love-cum-arranged" marriage took place in the presence of both families, and the grand reception was held in Delhi. Mallika Sherawat's uncle further told the magazine that the actress always thought she would be famous and rich one day. While she married Karan Singh Gill for love, she soon realised that marriage was not for her. He further added:
"She decided to quit wedlock and lead an independent lifestyle. From her own parents to her in-laws, everyone was against her decision, and as a result, she had a major argument with all of them. As we have heard, her in-laws were not interested in sending their girl into films, and they were completely against her late nights and parties. As a result, tension began to brew between Reema and Karan. This might be the reason for their break-up."
The magazine also reached out to Mallika Sherawat's ex-mother-in-law, who denied knowing Mallika. She claimed she only knew a girl named Reema Lamba (the actress' real name). She further revealed that Reema was her daughter-in-law, and that they all loved her very much. However, soon her independent nature and behaviour started to create problems within the family. She added:
"We wanted a girl who was independent in her thoughts but, at the same time, someone who understood the needs of the family also. But her dream was something different from what we expected. She wanted to have a career in the glamour industry."
For the uninitiated, after her divorce, Mallika Sherawat chose not to remarry and devoted everything to her work. The actress is currently winning hearts with her bindaas attitude in Traitors Season 2.
