24-Year-Old Activist, Malala Yousafzai Breaks Her Silence Over The Controversy Around Her Marriage

Malala Yousafzai is a Nobel Peace Prize laureate and has been working for the betterment of women for years now. The 24-year-old Pakistani human rights activist was shot in the head by the Pakistani Taliban when she was only 15 years old. And at the mere age of 16 years, she had made a speech on the need for gender equality in education at the United Nations headquarters. A few days back, Malala had got married to Asser Malik, and people from all over the world had congratulated her.

On November 9, 2021, Malala Yousafzai had shared a series of pictures from her intimate nikah ceremony with the manager for the Pakistan Cricket Board, Asser Malik. While some pictures were from their post-wedding photoshoot, some were from her nikah ceremony. Sharing the pictures, Malala had tweeted:

"Today marks a precious day in my life. Asser and I tied the knot to be partners for life. We celebrated a small nikkah ceremony at home in Birmingham with our families. Please send us your prayers. We are excited to walk together for the journey ahead."

In an interview with British Vogue, Malala Yousafzai had earlier expressed her concerns about marriage. Now, that Malala is a married woman, her critics have exploited the opportunity to take a dig at her and labelled her a hypocrite. As a result of this criticism, the 24-year-old Pakistani women's rights activist, Malala Yousafzai was obliged to address her past statement, which could be read as:

“I still don’t understand why people have to get married. If you want to have a person in your life, why do you have to sign marriage papers, why can’t it just be a partnership?”

After a few days of her marriage, the 24-year-old activist appeared on BBC One’s show, The Andrew Marr Show. Addressing her previous statement about marriage, Malala claimed that her worries were shared by "many girls around the world who have seen reports about child marriage and divorce... and the imbalance of power." She added:

“I was not against marriage, I had concerns about marriage and that is true for many girls around the world who have seen reports about child marriage and reports about forced marriage.”

Further in the conversation, calling for questioning the systems, Malala added that there was an imbalance of power in marriages, where women make more compromises than men. She added that she feels lucky to have found a partner who understands her values. In her words:

“A lot of these customs are influenced by patriarchy and misogyny. So you have to question the systems that we are living in and we have to question the status quo but I am lucky that I found a person who understands my values. He understands my sense of humour and we have a lot in common."
