Yesteryear’s superhit icon, Dharmendra hardly needs any introduction. He had always remained the true-blue matinee idol and has charmed everyone with his unbeatable charisma on the silver screen. However, as compared to his smooth sailing professional life, Dharmendra had a rather peculiar personal life, owing to the fact that the actor has been married twice, without divorcing his first wife, Prakash Kaur. The talented actor, Dharmendra had stepped into the institution of marriage for the first time quite early in his life, when he was all but 19. A match that was arranged by the families, Dharmendra married a then-19-year-old Prakash Kaur in a traditional Punjabi wedding in 1954. At that time, he had not entered into the world of films. Ever since their marriage, Prakash Kaur as compared to her husband’s public image, prefers to keep out of the limelight for reasons best known to her.

Unlike most other star-wives, Prakash Kaur has always manifested and kept a simple life without the humdrum peeking in the limelight. The couple in their long journey of togetherness, is blessed with four kids, that includes two sons and two daughters. While their sons, Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol have followed in the footsteps of their father and have bagged a big name in the world of cinema, it is their daughters, Vijeta and Ajeeta who have stayed away from the limlight, much like their mother.
Well, what could have been a tale of a happy couple along with their kids turned quite different when superhit actress, Hema Malini entered into the picture. For the unversed, without divorcing his first wife, Prakash Kaur, Dharmendra had gotten married for the second time to Hema Malini in 1980 after eloping and changing their religion. Naturally, not just this decision brought about a massive shock for Prakash, but it also threw her identity as Dharmendra’s wife to a long standstill. Moreover, it also brought the future of all his four children under a huge question mark.
The news of Dharmendra’s marriage to Hema Malini was quite chastised and hugely criticised. It was also thought that his first-wife, Prakash Kaur would ultimately have to give up and file for a divorce. However, things did not stir up anywhere close to the assumptions. In fact, Prakash Kaur never divorced from Dharmendra and even today, continues to be referred to as his wife. While this decision of her has often been misinterpreted as some kind of deal that she might have cracked with her husband, it was not so. In one of her interviews, Prakash Kaur had spoken about the same and had revealed:
“Everyone thought that I had made a deal with my husband that he could marry Hema if he launched my son's career. That is not true. How can such a thing be possible? Isn't Sunny as much his son as mine? Doesn't he love him as much as I love him."
A woman like Prakash Kaur can really be termed as an epitome because of her undying faith and respect for a husband, who had been unfaithful to her. While any other woman in her place would have rather thought to quit such a toxic marriage as this and instead move on with another man, Prakash never did that. For her, Dharmendra has been the first and last man in her life. In her words:
“He is the first and last man in my life. He is the father of my children. I love and respect him a lot. What has happened has happened. I don’t know whether I should blame him or destiny for it. But one thing is for certain however; far he may be from me, and whatever might happen. If I need him I know he’ll be there. I have not lost my trust in him. After all, he is the father of my children.”

With so many years having gone by, one may wonder how Prakash Kaur manages to share a household with a husband, who also has another wife. Moreover, considering Prakash’s preference for a simple, low-key life. Interestingly, rather than being envious of Hema, she instead feels sympathetic for the former and pities her. Spilling the beans on the same, Prakash Kaur had once spoken on the same and mentioned how she would have never done what Hema had done in her life. In her words:
“I can understand what Hema is going through. Even she has to face the world, her relatives and her friends. But if I were in Hema’s place, I would not have done what she did. For, as a woman, I can understand her feelings. But as a wife and a mother, I do not approve of them.”
Post his second marriage to Hema Malini, Dharmendra had welcomed their daughters, Esha and Ahana Deol in his life, making him in total a father of 6 children. Nevertheless, despite a new life, with Hema Malini and their daughters, Dharmendra never forgot about his first set of children, and most importantly, his first wife, Prakash Kaur. And so, the latter had once highlighted how good a father he has remained to her children. In her words:
“He may not be the best husband, though he is very good to me, but he is certainly the best father. His children love him a lot. He never neglects them. I don't know what people say about my and Dharmendra's relationship. All I know is that He takes great care of all of us. He comes home every evening and spends time with the children.”
At the age of 68, Prakash Kaur lives a happy and satisfied life with her kids, Sunny, Bobby, Ajeeta and Vijeta, along with her lovely group of grandchildren and extended families. While she may be camera shy on most occasions, it is through her sons, Sunny and Bobby’s frequent social media interactions that one can spot Prakash enjoying her second innings. Moreover, she is occasionally also spotted enjoying some time with her husband, Dharmendra, which simply proves that their love is not lost at all.
