Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao were married to each other for 15 years and announced their divorce in 2021. However, despite parting ways, the duo shares an amicable bond, and proof of the same was found when Kiran showed up for Aamir and Reena Dutta's daughter, Ira Khan’s wedding festivities. Kiran also shares a close friendship with Aamir's first ex-wife, Reena Dutta. In a recent interview, the filmmaker opened up about the same.
In an interview with Film Companion, Kiran Rao opened up about her equation with Reena Dutta. She shared that whenever she and Reena step out together, the paps go crazy about them. Revealing that they have a modern family, Kiran shared that she is happy to give tips to anyone on how to be friends with their ex's ex-wives. In her words:
“Whenever Reena and I are out together, the cameras go crazy. They aren’t even interested in Aamir. Reena and I are like okay we’ll stand together and smile because we are friends. Coming to this juncture of being the modern family, I feel great. I am all for being the poster girl of this kind of a modern, inclusive family. There should be more of this. I’m happy to give tips to anyone on how to be friends with their ex’s ex-wives.”

Speaking along the same lines, Kiran Rao shared that after a marriage ends, people should move on and continue their relationship as friends or family or co-parents. She revealed that when their son, Azad was born to a surrogate, she and Aamir were upfront about it. She added:
“We need more people showing that marriage is a wonderful relationship and people can move on it and continue their relationship as friends or family or co-parents. We did it when Azad was a surrogate. It was again quite new for people to come out and say this and we were upfront about it.”
Kiran further added that she and Aamir live in the same building and are fairly cordial with one another. She also mentioned that she is extremely close to Aamir's family and called it an unusual situation. However, the filmmaker urged people to take her and Aamir's bond positively and added:
“It doesn’t bother me. I was surprised because you do see other ex-couples being fairly cordial with one another. I guess it isn’t often that people are so close because Aamir and I also work together and we live in the same building. His family is more mine than his in some ways. So I guess that is unusual. But I am delighted that people are… people should take it positively. There is nothing but positivity when it comes to this space."

Aamir Khan and his first wife, Reena Dutta went separate ways after 16 years of married life and were granted divorce in 2002. After his divorce from Reena, Aamir found love in director-producer, Kiran Rao, and they tied the knot in December 2005. Aamir and Kiran embraced parenthood with the arrival of their son, Azad Rao Khan via IVF. However, in 2021, Aamir and Kiran announced their divorce, ending 15-and-a-half years of marriage. The duo still share a cordial bond with each other, which is praiseworthy.
Meanwhile, on the work front, Kiran Rao is awaiting the release of her next film, Laapataa Ladies, produced by Aamir Khan.
