Kiran Rao is an incredible filmmaker and screenwriter, who has been known to deliver some blockbuster projects at the box office. However, more often than not, she is recognised by her personal life, as the ex-wife of actor, Aamir Khan. For the unversed, Aamir and Kiran tied the knot in 2005, and were blessed with a son, Azaad. However, due to reasons best known to them, the duo parted ways amicably in 2021. Interestingly, despite having gone separate ways, Aamir and Kiran still share a great bond, partly because of co-parenting their son, and also because of having an amount of mutual love and respect for one another.
Kiran Rao is currently on a promotional spree for her directorial film, Laapataa Ladies. And in an interaction with Film Companion about the same, she revealed how she tried to resonate some of her personal experiences through it. The diva mentioned that while her film has multiple depictions of trauma, on the other hand, she feels grateful that she hasn’t experienced any trauma of relations in her life. Moreover, she expressed that she was able to display a sense of freedom that can be experienced in marriage and social expectations, something which she herself journeyed through. In her words:
“A lot of the issues we've addressed resonate because, in some way, we've all lived through them. I've been fortunate to experience only loving relationships, devoid of trauma. The aim was to portray how, within the confines of marriage and socially accepted relationships, one can discover freedom, self-identity, and pursue aspirations. I've personally lived that journey."

In one of her earlier interactions, Kiran Rao had spoken about the kind of equation she continues to share with her ex-husband, Aamir Khan and his family. The filmmaker revealed that there has been no change of bonding with one another’s family and added that she has the support of Aamir’s family always.
For the unversed, before Kiran Rao, Aamir Khan was married to Reena Dutta, and the duo were blessed with two kids, Ira and Junaid. However, they too parted ways by 2002. During his previous appearance in Koffee With Karan, Aamir Khan once spoke about the cordial equation he continues to share with both his ex-wives, and added that the three of them meet once a week. In his words:
“I have the highest regard and respect for both of them. Hum log hamesha parivar he rahenge.”

In one of his previous interviews with ABP News, Aamir Khan made a startling revelation when he stated that at one point in his life, he wanted to quit films. However, he didn’t forget to credit his ex-wife, Kiran Rao who convinced him not to do so. He mentioned:
“My children and Kiran explained to me I am doing the wrong thing. Kiran cried and said, 'When I see you, I see films residing inside you. What are you saying I'm unable to understand'. A lot happened in two years, I quit the industry and came back."
