Aamir Khan’s equation with his ex-wife, Kiran Rao has, over the time, became a huge topic of discussion amongst gossipmongers. The very plain reason for the same has been the fact that the two of them continue to share an extremely cordial equation with one another, and are more than friends for one another, despite having gone separate ways. Moreover, Aamir and Kiran continue to not just co-parent their son, Aazad, but also collaborate together on films and projects. And recently, Kiran made a rather unheard statement about the reason behind her divorce from Aamir.
In a recent interaction with Brut, Kiran Rao made some candid confessions about her divorce from Aamir Khan. She recalled that the two of them started to live together almost a year before they got married, as it not only helped them to understand each other better, but also made them restate belief in the institution of marriage and realise the best way they could make it work. However, she added, how over the time, she realised feeling stuck, and felt a need for an independent space. In her words:
“Aamir and I lived together for about a year before we got married, and honestly, we did it more because of parents. At that time too, we knew that it's a great institution if you can function as an individual as well as a couple within that institution. I knew that I needed my space. I wanted to live independently, and I needed that to grow myself. I felt that it was for my own growth and Aamir acknowledged that as well and supported that. So that actually really helped.”

Moving forward in the conversation, Kiran Rao was asked whether she felt afraid to take such a bold step of breaking apart her marriage and divorcing from Aamir Khan. To this, the filmmaker revealed that she didn’t really fear much about it, since she processed the whole episode gradually in her own pace. Moreover, she emphasised on the bond she continues to share with her ex-husband, Aamir Khan, which helped them to be respectful towards one another. In her words:
“I think the thing that we don't talk about enough is how marriage tends to stifle especially women. So, how you know you could perhaps find a way to be more yourself within it, is I think something that is up for debate and discussion. I took my sweet time so I didn't have any worry about it. The thing is, Aamir and I were very strong and continue to have a very strong relationship as two humans. We are very connected to each other; we deeply respect and love each other, so that hasn't changed, and so, therefore, I was not worried. It wasn't because we don't care for each other or have any problems or deep disagreements, so I didn't fear divorce."
In one of her earlier interview with Zoom, Kiran Rao highlighted on the loving and respectful equation she continues to share with not just her ex-husband, Aamir Khan, but also his family. Speaking along the same lines, she talked about her ex-mother-in-law, Zeenat Hussain and remarked that the latter is the ‘apple of her eye’. Kiran also revealed how, even after her divorce, she and her son continue to be a very crucial part of Aamir Khan’s family.

Previously, while speaking with DNA, Kiran Rao opened up about the impact of her divorce from Aamir Khan on their son, Azaad. The doting mother revealed how she and her ex-husband just wanted to end the social contract between themselves and make the process very smooth, so that their son didn’t get affected by it. In her words:
“For me, it’s been quite easy at some level to manage the separation of having both personal relationship that is no longer marriage as well as professional. We decided that we wanted to change the definition of our relationship and end the social contract. We worked at it in a smooth way because we were conscious that Azad should not be, in any way, traumatised by this public breakup.”
