When the Kapoor khandaan had opposed marrying actresses, Randhir Kapoor had fallen for Babita Shivdasani and breaking the orthodox tradition of the family, in 1971, Randhir and Babita were pronounced husband and wife. When Babita had asked Randhir to either marry her or dump her, the latter cleverly signed his ladylove for his debut film, Kal Aaj Aur Kal, which also had Prithviraj Kapoor and Raj Kapoor. And this way, he had introduced Babita to the Kapoor family in the filmiest way possible. But Babita’s career was cut short as she had to quit acting post her wedding with Randhir. Babita and Randhir Kapoor were blessed with firstborn, a daughter, Karisma Kapoor in 1974 and seven years later in 1981, their family got completed with the arrival of their second daughter, Kareena Kapoor. But their married life went for a toss and soon they had parted their ways. Though they are separated, Randhir and Babita had let bygones be bygones and had never filed for the divorce. The ex-couple meets each other for family get-togethers, vacations and maintains a cordial relationship.
On April 20, 2020, Babita turned 73 and to mark this special day, her daughter, Kareena Kapoor Khan posted a throwback picture of her parents. Making the day super special, Bebo treated her fans with an unseen picture of Randhir Kapoor and Babita and wished her mom in the caption, which could be read as “Happy Birthday Queen” followed by heart emoticons. In the picture, we can see Randhir and Babita holding each other’s hands and it will surely remind of their Kal Aaj Aur Kal days.
Last year, to celebrate Babita’s 72nd birthday, Karisma Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor Khan along with Samaira Kapoor, Kiaan Raj Kapoor and Taimur Ali Khan had headed off to visit an ancient church in Nasik. Karisma had taken to her Instagram handle to post a ‘birthday special’ family picture with mom, Babita. Karisma had captioned it, “Birthday special! #family #happybirthdaymom”. Karisma had posted a throwback photo of her mom, Babita with the most heartfelt message for her. Karisma had written, “Happy Birthday Mom we love you the most. Thank you for always reminding me that our fans are most precious. Back in the day, actors would personally autograph pictures of themselves and send it as a reply to all their fan letters. It was a personal gesture to reciprocate the love and blessings that were sent via fan mail. Non digital age #happybirthday #family #mom.” Karisma had also shared a 'favourites' selfie with sister, Kareena and daughter, Samaira. In July 2019, the Kapoors and Pataudis had spent pure family time in London as Kareena Kapoor Khan, Saif Ali Khan and Taimur Ali Khan were joined by Karisma Kapoor, Samaira Kapoor and Kiaan Raj Kapoor on their vacation. Randhir Kapoor and Babita had later joined the kids. On July 8, 2019, Karisma had posted a sunkissed #FamJam picture with her parents, sister and kids but their fans had missed her nephew, Taimur Ali Khan in the family photograph. While Kareena and Karisma had looked super-stylish in black jacket and denim, Randhir, Babita, Samaira and Kiaan had opted for casual looks for the day. Daddy’s little girls, Kareena and Karisma can be seen holding their father's arms.
In an interview with the Hindustan Times, Randhir Kapoor had revealed why he hasn’t divorced Babita. He was quoted as saying, "Divorce for what? Why should we head for divorce? I don’t intend to get married again, and nor does she. She found that I was a terrible man who drank a lot and came home late, which was something she didn’t like. And I didn’t want to live the way she wanted, and she couldn’t accept me as I am, though it was a love marriage. So, it’s okay. We had two lovely children to look after. She brought them up in the best way and they have excelled in their career. What else I could have asked for as a father?"
When asked if Babita still has a special place in his heart, Randhir Kapoor had retorted, “She’s a crucial part of my life. She has given me two lovely kids. We are all grown up people, and we preferred to stay separately, [but] we are not enemies.” Elaborating on the fact that despite living under different roofs nothing much has changed between them, Randhir had stated, “We still meet each other quite often. We go out, have dinners together, meet at family parties, and she’s always there at family events, whether it’s at Rishi’s place or my house.” (Also Read: Randhir Kapoor-Babita's Marital Life: 31 Years Of Separation, No Divorce, Failed In Reconciliation)
