John Goodman once believed he was hiding his alcoholism from the people around him, even as he continued drinking at work. The Roseanne star later admitted that his flushed face often gave him away, describing himself as looking "like a stop sign." Years later, after getting sober and confronting his unhealthy relationship with food, Goodman embarked on a weight-loss journey that helped him shed around 200 pounds.

The actor, now 74, looks unrecognizable from his former self. Goodman has been candid about the struggles that affected his health and personal life.

John Goodman admitted he drank at work while secretly battling alcoholism

In a 2018 interview with Sunday TODAY host Willie Geist, Goodman opened up about how alcohol had taken control of his life. Despite continuing to land notable acting roles, he acknowledged that his drinking was affecting his work, sometimes leaving him with slurred speech on set. He said:

"I got so lucky, because I was still getting hired for things. But the fact is I was drinking at work. My speech would be slurred."

Goodman admitted he thought he was concealing the problem, but his appearance often told a different story. He recalled, "I thought I was fooling people. But my cheeks would turn bright red when I was liquored up. I just looked like a stop sign."

The turning point came after a long weekend when he went golfing with friends. By Sunday morning, he was still drinking but had begun shaking. Recognizing that he needed help, he called his wife, Anna Beth Goodman, who then helped arrange his treatment. Goodman shared:

"She made some phone calls, we got me into a treatment center, and I detoxed there and decided I liked the feeling."

Goodman stopped drinking in 2007, after years of struggling with alcoholism. He later described his addiction as a cycle of hangovers, withdrawal symptoms, and drinking again to relieve them. In a 2012 interview with The Guardian, the actor reflected on how his drinking had affected those around him, calling it a disease that had taken a toll on everyone in his life. He ultimately realized that he needed to change before his health deteriorated further.

Goodman also credited his Roseanne co-star Roseanne Barr with confronting him about his drinking. During an appearance on Howard Stern's SiriusXM show, he recalled that Barr was concerned for him and was willing to address the problem directly.

John Goodman reached nearly 400 lbs before his weight-loss transformation

Getting sober was a major step, but Goodman soon faced another challenge. After giving up alcohol, he struggled with overeating and described his relationship with food as similar to his former addiction. In a 2026 interview with The New Yorker, the actor revealed that he had reached nearly 400 pounds at his heaviest. He admitted:

"I'd lose sixty pounds in a summer, gain it all back. Seventy pounds, eighty pounds. And that got tiring. I took steps so I wouldn't have to do that anymore. I was almost four hundred pounds. I was eating alcoholically after I stopped drinking."

The Roseanne star explained that he had been chasing instant gratification, whether through alcohol or food, without considering the consequences. Sobriety forced him to confront the habits that had shaped his life for years. He said:

"I was delaying my maturation by drinking, and I had a lot of catching up to do, just realizing how selfish it made me. I was overlooking real life. And it was great to see there was a life where I didn't have to use anything to enjoy it."

Goodman has credited a combination of dietary changes and exercise with helping him maintain his weight loss. He worked with health coach Mackie Shilstone and adopted a Mediterranean-style eating plan, while also cutting back on sugar and exercising regularly.

In a 2016 interview with ABC News, he explained that earlier attempts to lose weight had often involved losing dozens of pounds quickly before returning to old habits. This time, he wanted to make gradual, sustainable changes. His exercise routine has included daily walks and boxing workouts involving footwork, punching bags, and mitts. More recently, after fracturing his hip in an on-set injury, Goodman has focused on lower-impact exercise, strength training, balance, and physical therapy.

Goodman's transformation was especially noticeable in his 2023 public appearances, continuing to stir things up at the Smurfs premiere in July 2025. He has lost nearly 200 pounds from his heaviest weight, but staying healthy is still a work in progress.
