During that time, Hayden was at an Airbnb with her on-and-off-boyfriend, Brian Hickerson, and his brother, Zach, was also present.
Initially, the cause of Hayden's death was not revealed; however, later, reports suggested that the actress had died of an apparent overdose. An official cause of Hayden's death has not been revealed yet; on the other hand, initial autopsy reports showed that there was no physical trauma or suspicious circumstances surrounding her death.

Following Hayden's passing, her estranged mother, Lesley Vogel, released a statement, which brought her flak from several people, including Gayle King. While Lesley earlier admitted that although she and her late daughter were estranged, it was not due to a lack of care, she now reacted to the criticism she had to face during this tough time. For the unversed, Lesley lost her son, Jansen, back in 2023. It's understandable the amount of pain the mom of two late children is enduring, and at this moment, she felt that the criticism was just 'shameful'.
Speaking to the Daily Mail, Lesley Vogel recently said that it's just sad; however, she also stated that she doesn't have the luxury of being weak now, given that she has a lot to do for her daughter. Lesley further added that it in no way implies that she's not mourning; however, when she is done with the things she intends to do, she mentioned that she will take her moment to mourn deeply. Vogel's exact words were:
"But this is not the time for me to be weak. I don’t have the luxury right now of being weak. I have too much to do for Hayden. When I’m done with that, then I will give myself the luxury to mourn — deeply mourn. I’m not saying I’m not grieving now. I am, and I do have my moments. But the bigger picture right now is I have to stay strong. I don’t have an option.”
Along with Gayle King, Megyn Kelly criticised Lesley Vogel's initial statement about Hayden Panettiere's death at 36. Speaking about the same, the actress's mom mentioned that she's hurt and disappointed, seeing the lack of professionalism and compassion in slamming someone who has lost two children. She called it 'shameful' while adding that no one has reached out to her. To quote Vogel:
“I was very, very hurt and deeply disappointed in the lack of professionalism, the lack of compassion in slamming someone who's lost two children, without even a modicum of consideration. No one reached out to me before. It's shameful. It's unconscionable to me.”

Following Hayden Panettiere's passing, Lesley Vogel released a statement, noting that her daughter was a talented person who thrived in several departments. The estranged mom also said that she feels that for young people who grew up in the industry, it's not 'unusual for them to sadly find the wrong path'. She also talked about Hayden's ex, Brian, while mentioning that her daughter was with him at the time she passed away.
She also shared that they 'have been trying to get rid of (him) for quite some time'. The statement was criticised by several people, including Gayle King, who interviewed Hayden about her estranged relationship with her mom. Apart from Gayle, Holly Robinson Peete and Megyn Kelly also criticised Lesley's statement after her daughter's passing, which led her to release another statement. Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, Lesley stated that the estrangement between her and Hayden was due to a 'toxic' person whom the mom of two believed led the actress to her death.
