The 72nd edition of the beauty pageant, Miss Universe, made history by breaking various decades-long stereotypes. In 2023, the beauty pageant was more about embracing inclusivity and representation. The latest Miss Universe competition featured a diverse group of contestants, including a plus-sized model, two mothers, two transgender people, the first Pakistani, and the first Black Miss Spain competing for the competition.

Miss Universe 2023 became the first time our neighbour, Pakistan, participated in the pageantry. A 25-year-old model named Erica Robin represented the country on the world beauty stage. She also made it to the list of top 20 contestants, where more than 80 countries participated. Erica won the title of Miss Universe Pakistan in September 2023.

Netizens react to Erica Robin's latest Instagram post

As soon as Erica dropped the glimpses on social media, netizens took to the comment section of the post and started sharing their two cents. The comments section turned into a heated debate as numerous people expressed their opinions about her choice of outfit. One user wrote, “She is the same girl who wear burkini in miss universe and now showing her all body, double standard.” Another one came in support of her and said, “I don't like Western attire at all. Pakistani dresses are the best. Yet I respect you a lot mam. You made history by presenting Pakistan in a decent way in The biggest contest in the world. You are a non-Muslim, you could easily choose to wear a bikini, but you chose to wear a burkini. Will always love you. Will tell my daughter about you when she grows up. Respect.” Check out other comments on her post:

Erica Robin says people tend to confuse religion and culture

Erica made a bold statement during the swimsuit round in Miss Universe 2023, as she was seen wearing a ‘burkini’ for the round. She wore a baby pink colour kaftan, which had a shimmery-ruffled neckline. Erica gave a strong yet beautiful statement in the competition by ditching the usual bikinis and wearing something that made her comfortable and more appropriate per her country’s norms. Recently, Erica appeared as a guest on the Adnan Faisal Podcast and discussed with the host how religion and culture are two different things. She said that she is a Christian by religion and her culture does not allow her to wear any piece of clothing. She said:

“Log religion ko culture se mix karte hai. Thik hai I am a Christian but hamara culture allow nahi karta ki aap kuch bhi pehne le. Bahar logon ke dimaag mein misconception hai ki ‘Oh, she’s Christian, she’s going to wear everything’ wo bahar ka culture hai, religion nahi hai. Kisi ka religion nahi bol raha ki aap jo bhi kare, jo bhi pehne, it’s the culture.”
