You Can See Everything has brought back attention to the Theranos fraud case and the life of its founder, Elizabeth Holmes. However, amid that, another aspect of Holmes' life has come to light: her secret affair with her business partner Ramesh "Sunny" Balwani. While the duo went to great lengths to keep their romance hidden, it could only remain that way for so long.

Elizabeth Holmes and Sunny Balwani's relationship came to light following the fall of Theranos in 2018. And now, with Holmes in the headlines, their office romance is once again a topic of discussion.

Inside Elizabeth Holmes and Sunny Balwani's bizarre romance

Elizabeth Holmes and Sunny Balwani first met in 2002 at a language immersion program with Stanford University in Beijing, China. While Holmes was just 18 years old, Balwani was a 37-year-old married university student pursuing his MBA at the University of California. Despite their 19-year age gap, the two maintained contact, with both often exchanging emails. Holmes talked about Balwani during her trial in 2021 and said:

"I understood that he'd been a really successful businessperson, that he worked with Bill Gates in the early days of Microsoft. I talked to him about wanting to start a company, and a company that I tried to build in high school, and I asked for his advice."

According to a 2018 book titled Bad Blood: Secrets and Lies in a Silicon Valley Startup, Sunny Balwani would often email Elizabeth Holmes during her first year at Stanford. By the time she dropped out of college in 2004 to create the company that would later become Theranos, Holmes and Balwani were officially an item. Things quickly took a turn, and by 2005, Holmes was living with Balwani in Palo Alto.

However, Elizabeth Holmes and Sunny Balwani decided to keep their relationship a secret from the investors as Theranos continued to expand. The latter focused on his own endeavors, as he had started a multi-million-dollar corporation that eventually sold for USD 40 million and joined his girlfriend at her company. Although Balwani had no medical experience, he was hired as president and chief operating officer of Theranos in 2009.

According to Nick Bilton, the journalist who wrote a series of investigative reports about Theranos for Vanity Fair, Sunny Balwani was something of a watchdog at the company. He revealed that his role was more of an enforcer and said:

"When employees questioned the accuracy of the company's blood-testing technology, it was Balwani who would chastise them in emails (or in person). He ensured that scientists and engineers at Theranos did not talk to one another about their work."

Elizabeth Holmes and Sunny Balwani's breakup and what happened after?

Elizabeth Holmes and Sunny Balwani stayed together for almost the entirety of Theranos. They parted ways in 2016, just as the company began to fall apart. Balwani announced his departure from the company, while some reports alleged that he was fired. His departure came amid a series of investigations by the FBI, the FDA, and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) into Theranos' testing facilities and Holmes herself. While they parted ways, Balwani did not get to walk away scot-free.

Both Elizabeth Holmes and Sunny Balwani were banned from ever owning or operating a blood testing laboratory in the future, and the latter was charged by the SEC in March 2018 with securities fraud for "raising more than USD 700 million from investors through an elaborate, years-long fraud in which they exaggerated or made false statements about the company's technology, business, and financial performance".

While Holmes settled this case privately, Balwani resolved the civil charges by agreeing to a penalty and a bar from serving as an officer or director of a public company. However, he neither admitted nor denied the allegations. In addition to the SEC action, federal prosecutors pursued criminal charges against Sunny Balwani. In 2022, a jury found Balwani guilty on all 12 criminal counts of wire fraud and conspiracy.

While things were getting complicated for Elizabeth Holmes and Sunny Balwani, the former testified against her former partner and alleged that he was verbally and sexually abusive during their relationship. According to her testimony as quoted by Vanity Fair, Balwani wanted her to "kill the person" she was if she wanted to become a "successful entrepreneur". She added:

"He would tell me not to sleep much, eat only foods that would make me pure and would make me have the most energy possible in the company. He would get very angry with me, and then he would sometimes come upstairs to our bedroom and force me to have sex with him when I didn't want to, because he wanted me to know that he still loved me."

For those who are not aware, Sunny Balwani was eventually sentenced to nearly 13 years in federal prison and ordered to pay USD 452 million in restitution alongside Elizabeth Holmes. He was also ordered to serve three years of probation, according to court documents. He is currently serving his sentence at the FCI Terminal Island near Los Angeles and is slated for release in April 2034.
