Dolly Parton was always spotted with her wig and makeup
Dolly Parton always looked perfectly styled, wearing her signature wig and makeup for every performance or interview. After the country legend's passing, many people became curious about how she looked without her wig and makeup, since those elements were such a central part of her public identity.
Parton had always been open about her affection for wigs. During a 2016 interview on Hallmark Channel's Home & Family, she had explained that she started wearing wigs after her bleached hair broke off. She had shared that she used to tease her natural hair as big as she liked, but the bleaching caused it to break, so she decided to switch to wigs to avoid ever having a bad hair day.
She was never photographed without her wig and makeup after that incident, though in her early years she wore her natural sandy blonde hair, as seen in most photographs from that time. Dolly Parton was also quite private about her look without the wig and makeup.
In a 2003 interview, she had joked that she would not step out of the house without them unless her husband had a medical emergency, and added that even her longtime business manager had never seen her without them.
It is worth noting that the wig was very much her public face, while things were different at home. She also told Allure in 2024 that at home, she often goes without a wig and wears her own bleached hair in a simple style.
Dolly Parton decided to have a wig for certain reasons
As per beauty brand Beauty Nexus Pro, Dolly Parton chose a big, bouncy blonde wig because she was tired of blow-drying her hair before every show. She even said in her 2021 memoir Songteller that another reason behind having a wig was because she wanted to look like the dream she had imagined for herself. She also wanted to copy the style of gospel and country singers from that time.
On the Home & Family show, she had joked about liking high hair and curls, and had said that gospel and country singers simply had to have big hair as it was part of the tradition.
In a 2020 cover story for Good Housekeeping, the icon confirmed that she wore wigs every day but still took care of her natural hair when she was not touring. She had mentioned that she sometimes let it grow long enough to braid just for fun, but never for the stage, and described her wigs as her armor.
Some of her personal items, including her famous wigs, are displayed in the Dolly Suite 1986 immersive tour bus experience at Dollywood's DreamMore Resort & Spa in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. Dolly Parton once recalled that her husband, Carl Dean, always compared her hairpiece to a Q-Tip because it looked so large.
