The veteran star chose to step away from the spotlight due to her personal grief and her ongoing health challenges. Dolly missed several recent events due to her medical treatments and minor procedures. She revealed that her treatments left her feeling a bit dizzy, making it a bit unsafe to perform in her signature heels. Recently, in June 2026, she made a rare public appearance, during which she seemed unwell to onlookers. They expressed concern for her health.

Dolly Parton recently surprised her fans with a rare appearance in Cornersville, Tennessee. The country icon was there to attend the grand opening of her new business venture, Dolly's Tennessean Travel Stop. While the public was thrilled at her presence, some pointed out that she looked unwell. Dolly sparked concern among her fans as the video from the opening ceremony got circulated online. In the clips, she appeared slightly unsteady on her feet and required physical support from her assistants.

During the ribbon-cutting ceremony, two handlers stood closely by Dolly's side, held her arm and helped her lift a pair of oversized ceremonial scissors over her head. The 80-year-old definitely brought radiance and energy to her Travel Stop's opening ceremony; however, her losing her balance and needing support even to lift a pair of scissors sparked concern across social media. Notably, Dolly Parton's June 2026 appearance came just a month after she officially cancelled her Las Vegas residency due to her ongoing medical treatments, which, as per her,  made her feel too "swimmy-headed" and dizzy to perform on stage in her five-inch heels.

Dolly Parton has candidly shared about her health struggles with her fans. She is currently recovering from complications related to kidney stones, along with related digestive and immune system issues. In late 2025, the veteran star underwent multiple medical procedures to treat her kidney stones. In May 2026, she provided an update on her health, noting that her road to recovery has been hindered by weaknesses in her digestive and immune systems. Dolly also revealed that the side effects from her prescribed medications have added to her health troubles.

Besides Dolly Parton's health, her personal loss led her to step back from the spotlight

Dolly Parton's stepping away from the spotlight was primarily driven by the death of her husband, Carl Dean. After nearly 60 years of marriage, he passed away at the age of 82 in March 2025. The immense grief of the loss, compounded by her health issues, led the veteran star to halt her career and heal physically and emotionally. In light of her low phase, she missed the 2025 Governors' Awards and accepted her Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award virtually. Dolly also postponed her highly anticipated Las Vegas residency.
