Were Dolly Parton and Miley Cyrus distant cousins?
A report by Ancestry.com stated that Miley and Dolly were seventh cousins. In the 1700s, Dolly's sixth-great-grandfather, along with Miley's seventh-great-grandfather, John Brickey, stayed within a 20-mile radius of what is now known as Dollywood in Tennessee’s Smoky Mountains. The report stated that Miley's seventh-great-grandfather, John Brickey, was born in Virginia and later moved to Blount County, Tennessee, with his wife and children. Dolly had also given the sweetest reaction to the news and had told Access Hollywood:
"Is that true? That’s amazing! Well, we’re so close, Miley and I. I would’ve thought we’d at least be third cousins...ten times removed.”
Miley Cyrus felt that Dolly Parton was like a mom to her
Miley used to often gush about her connection with her godmother, Dolly. Miley once said in an interview with W Magazine that Dolly was like a mom to her. Dolly's stint on Hannah Montana cannot be forgotten, when Dolly's favourite track, Jolene, was introduced to the world. In the words of the singer:
"Dolly's been like a mother to me. Actually, I was just reading this fax that she sent me two Mother's Days ago. Cyrus recalled what the note said and stated, “Dolly wrote to me to say: 'How much do I love you? As much as my heart can hold and as far as my arms can reach.' It gets me choked up. I just love her so much.”
In Hannah Montana, Dolly and Miley's episodes were popular with fans. She had come on the show as the ultra-glam and outspoken 'Aunt Dolly'. Fans were reminded that Dolly and Miley had a very close bond. Another NBC News report discussed Dolly's connection to Miley Cyrus. She called herself the honorary godmother. Miley has known Dolly since she was a baby and was quoted saying:
"I'm her honorary godmother. I've known her since she was a baby. Her father's a friend of mine, and when she was born, he said, 'You just have to be her godmother,' and I said, 'I accept.' We never did do a big ceremony, but I'm so proud of her, love her. And she's just like one of my own.”
Some reports claim that Miley and Dolly have no blood ties, but both have always seen one another as family. Dolly had also spoken about her equation with Cyrus' dad, Billy Ray Cyrus, in an interview with the London Evening Standard. She stated:
"I love Miley. I worked with her daddy, Billy Ray [Cyrus], when he had 'Achy Breaky Heart '; we toured together for a few years, and, of course, Miley became my goddaughter; I was her fairy godmother. We really have a true bond; she is like a daughter or a sister to me.”
Dolly, appreciating Miley Cyrus, had also shared that when she was called on the Hannah Montana show back years ago, she got a lot of help in her career. Dolly Parton passed away at the age of 80 on August 25, 2026. Dolly's nephew, Bryan Seaver, had announced the heartbreaking news via an Instagram clip. He shared that he is the son of Cassie Parton and that he is representing the Parton and Owens families. Bryan revealed that his aunt, Dolly Rebecca Parton, who was also a sister and a grandmother, passed away.
