Veteran actress, Dimple Kapadia is one of the most gorgeous actresses of all time. At the mere age of 14, she was discovered by the late legendary actor, Raj Kapoor, who had cast her opposite his son, Rishi Kapoor, in the evergreen film, Bobby (1973). The actress had become a national crush within days after the film's release but leaving all the fame behind, Dimple had decided to tie the knot with the man of her dreams, Rajesh Khanna, in 1973. Together they had welcomed two daughters, Rinkie Khanna and Twinkle Khanna.
However, soon they had parted ways with each other in 1984 and two years after their separation, Dimple Kapadia had made her comeback to the film industry with the film, Saagar (1985). Soon she had started grabbing vital roles in big movies and had also given many memorable performances in her career so far. With her performances in movies like Kaash, Drishti, Lekin…, Rudaalli, Gardish, Krantiveer, Dil Chahta Hai, Cocktail, Finding Fanny, and the list goes on. She had even worked in Hollywood with one of the greatest directors of all time, Christopher Nolan in his film, Tenet.
Once in a conversation with renowned Indian poet and journalist, Pritish Nandy on his celebrity talk show, The Pritish Nandy Show, popular actress, Dimple Kapadia opened up about her marriage with late superstar, Rajesh Khanna and the reason behind their separation. Reflecting on the fact that they had parted ways despite welcoming two daughters, Rinkie Khanna and Twinkle Khanna, in their lives, Dimple had stated that both she and Rajesh were two completely different kinds of people, which she had realised after their marriage. However, she had also added that she was never a superstar. Thus, she couldn't realise what was going on in her ex-husband's head at that time. Dimple had stated:
"I think we were two very different kind of people. I was probably very young to understand what was happening to this man, who was a superstar. I have never been able to understand stars and their behaviour pattern at all because I am not one myself. I just couldn't understand."
A few years ago, Dimple Kapadia had attended an event at FICCI (Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry) and had revisited the day when she had indirectly proposed to her ex-husband, late Rajesh Khanna, for marriage. Recalling the memorable moment, Dimple had stated that it had happened months before the release of her debut film, Bobby (1973), while she was travelling to London for an event with Rajesh Khanna on a private flight. The actress had explained how she cleverly told the superstar to marry her. Dimple had said:
"We were going to Ahmedabad on a private flight for a function. I was born dramatic. Bachpan se drama ka shauk bohot jyada tha. He sat next to me. I was looking at him. Rajesh Khanna, I mean come on guys, give me a break. I very chalaak-ly told him, ‘Wahan toh bohot crowd hoga, bheed hogi. Aap mera haath pakdoge na?’ He said, 'Haan bilkul', I replied, 'Hamesha ke liye?' And the rest is history. It happened."
For the unversed, after some years of their separation, Rajesh Khanna and Dimple Kapadia had rediscovered their lost love and care for each other. However, they had continued to live separately reportedly in order to avoid the media limelight on their relationship. Soon they had started making public appearances together, from social gatherings and political rallies to events, Rajesh and Dimple were back together. Once in a throwback interview with a newspaper, Rajesh Khanna had admitted that he was still in love with Dimple, even after their separation. He had said:
"You know what? I still love my wife, Dimple."
Unfortunately, Rajesh Khanna had passed away on 18 July 2012 at his bungalow, Aashirwad in Mumbai. During his last rites, Dimple Kapadia was inconsolable, which had proved that she had a concrete bond with her ex-husband.
Rajesh Khanna, a name which gives the Indian film industry its identity, ruled the silver screen in the 60s and 70s like a king. Being India’s first superstar, his life and affairs were always in the limelight, but it was his marriage to the then-budding star Dimple Kapadia that madeRead More
