Brad Pitt was 'deeply hurt' as his kids dropped his surname
Maddox became Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt's second child after Zahara, to drop the Fight Club actor's surname. According to reports by Us Weekly and PEOPLE, Brad Pitt was "deeply hurt," "devastated," and "upset" to learn that his children no longer want to be associated with his name. Sources said the constant public reminders that his children were distancing themselves from him were extremely difficult for him to handle.
While the actor has not made any public statements himself, the reports from close sources included details about his severe emotional distress over the growing estrangement with his children. Insiders revealed that Brad's biggest fear was being permanently cut off from his kids.

Maddox, the eldest of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt's six children, legally transitioned from Maddox Chivan Jolie-Pitt to Maddox Chivan Jolie. The 25-year-old filed to drop the Pitt surname on May 28, 2026, and on September 14, 2026, a judge in Los Angeles County Superior Court ruled in his favour. Not just Maddox, his siblings also hold certain grudges against their father, Brad Pitt.
Besides Maddox and Zahara, their siblings Vivienne and Shiloh Nouvel also filed to drop the Pitt surname legally. A few years before the name-dropping row, Brad and Angelina's adopted son, Pax Jolie-Pitt, publicly shared his grievances against his dad. In 2020, Pax took to Instagram to criticize the Ocean's Eleven actor, alleging that he made his family's life miserable.
As per Pax, his father is an "awful human being", who made his close people's life a living hell. In his words:
"You have made the lives of those closest to me a constant hell...The truth will come to light some day. So Happy Father's Day, you f*****g awful human being. You time and time and again prove yourself to be a terrible and despicable person."
Pax further claimed that Brad Pitt was a "terrible and despicable person" who lacked empathy. He accused the Mr. & Mrs. Smith actor of unacceptable behavior towards his youngest children, which allegedly made them shake in fear. Pax further alleged that Brad will never realize his wrongdoings or regret his life choices. Pax posted the statement on the Story of his private Instagram account, according to the Daily Mail.
Through the lengthy rant, he poured out his resentment towards his father, blaming him for causing irreparable damage to him and his siblings. Pax Jolie-Pitt was quoted as stating:
"You have no consideration or empathy toward your four youngest children who tremble in fear when in your presence. You will never understand the damage you have done to my family because you're incapable of doing so."
Thus, things between Brad Pitt and his children are far from getting mended. Their years of resentment toward the actor will only push them further apart. As of September 2026, Brad has moved on with his lady love, Ines de Ramon, while Angelina Jolie plans to start a new life outside Los Angeles and hopefully find love again.
