Ben Jones and Alma Viator were married for more than 30 years
While Ben Jones was a popular face in the entertainment industry, he had a family outside the world of movies and television. Notably, he was married to Alma Viator. According to Alma’s Facebook page, she has been operating Cooter’s Place museums and shops in three places, including Luray in Virginia, followed by Pigeon Forge and Nashville, Tennessee.
Alma went to Valley High School in Valley Station, Kentucky. She then enrolled at East Tennessee State University. As mentioned, Alma was the one who confirmed the news of Ben’s death. She shared a Facebook post with a photo of Ben, where he was sitting with his dog. The caption reads:
“I lost the love of my life today. Ben passed from a massive heart attack. He was home resting in his favorite chair waiting for the Braves to come on and whoop the Yankees. Ben had the most amazing rich full life. He loved and was loved by so many. He will be missed. I loved him so so much.”
Although Ben was a well-known personality, he preferred to keep his personal life away from the spotlight for all these years. He and Alma tied the knot in October 1992. Ben also had two children, reportedly born from his previous marriages, which included a daughter named Rachel and a son named Walker.
Ben Jones released multiple films and TV shows over the years
Ben Jones started working in Hollywood in the 1970s, building credits in both television and film before becoming a household name. One of his early screen appearances was in Moonrunners in 1975, following which he portrayed uncredited roles in The Bingo Long Traveling All-Stars & Motor Kings and Smokey and the Bandit.
In 1979, Ben Jones was cast as 'Cooter Davenport' on The Dukes of Hazzard, which aired on CBS. Ben Jones was featured in seven seasons of the show. It focused on cousins 'Bo' and 'Luke Duke' and became a staple of CBS’ primetime lineup during the early 1980s.
Ben Jones later took roles on other television productions, including the daytime drama As the World Turns. He later gained recognition for his appearances in films like On the Line, Dakota, Jack, Primary Colors, and more.
After leaving full-time acting, Ben Jones shifted to public office. In 1988, Ben Jones campaigned for Georgia’s 4th Congressional District and was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives as a Democrat. Ben Jones won a second term in 1990. His time in Washington ran from January 1989 through January 1993. In 1994, Ben Jones ran for Congress again but was not elected.
Later, Ben Jones remained connected to his television legacy through business ventures tied to his character. He was linked to Cooter’s Place, with stores in Gatlinburg and Nashville, Tennessee, that featured The Dukes of Hazzard memorabilia.
