Ben Jones, who is best known for his role as 'Cooter Davenport' on The Dukes of Hazzard, passed away at the age of 84. The actor-turned-politician's death has come as a major shock to his fans, as there was no previous report that suggested Jones was facing any sort of medical ailment. So, as the entertainment world mourns the loss of one of the beloved actors, here's what you need to know about his passing.

Ben Jones passed away at the age of 84

Ben Jones passed away on Sunday, August 9, 2026 (ET). The news of his death was confirmed by his wife, Alma Viator, with whom he shared two beautiful children. The couple tied the knot in 1992, with his death bringing an end to their 33 years of marriage. 

What happened to Ben Jones?

Ben Jones' wife, Alma Viator, announced the death of her husband and The Dukes of Hazzard star in a Facebook post. She revealed that Jones was in his favorite chair waiting to watch a baseball match when he passed away. She explained that the star suffered a massive heart attack, which took his life.

According to his wife, Alma Viator's Facebook post, Ben Jones was waiting to see "Braves whoop the Yankees" when the heart attack happened. However, before medics could do anything, the star passed away. Viator shared that Jones had lived a full life and was loved by many. Her post was quoted as saying:

"I lost the love of my life today. Ben passed from a massive heart attack. He was home resting in his favorite chair waiting for the Braves to come on and whoop the Yankees. Ben had the most amazing, rich, full life. He loved and was loved by so many. He will be missed. I loved him so much."

Ben Jones rose to fame with his role as 'Cooter Davenport' in The Dukes of Hazzard. He was the Hazzard County mechanic and an honorary member of the Duke clan. The actor appeared in 142 episodes, making him a loved face on the show. Jones starred alongside Tom Wopat, John Schneider, Catherine Bach, Denver Pyle, Sorrell Brooke and Waylon Jennings. 

Tom Wopat also shared a post mourning the loss of his The Dukes of Hazzard co-star. In an Instagram post, he shared that Ben Jones was an integral part of the cast and a good friend. He admitted that they will definitely miss the actor. In a heartfelt post, he was quoted as saying:

"The Dukes of Hazzard lost another integral part of their cast today. Ben Jones was a fine friend and a fierce advocate of all the best things we can offer in the entertainment business. He will be sorely missed… Denver Pyle frequently said to Ben, 'I'm not your Uncle Jesse!' But I feel like we lost a Duke cousin today."

Apart from being an actor, Ben Jones was also a politician. In 1988, Jones ran for Congress in Georgia's Fourth Congressional District and won by 20 points. He was reelected in 1990. Four years later, redistricting took his seat, and he lost his next race against Newt Gingrich.
