Asha Bhosle was not just a singer, but a strong woman who, despite all the odds, made herself stand apart. She was the younger sister of Lata Mangeshkar, but despite this, she never let Lata’s popularity dim her talent. Hailed for her versatile voice, Asha dared to break taboos with her bold songs. Her sensuous voice ruled the industry for over eight decades.
In her long career, Asha sang in over 20 Indian and foreign languages. Asha was renowned for her soprano voice and changed the music industry with her cabaret numbers, including Dum Maro Dum, Piya Tu Ab To Aaja, Yeh Mera Dil Yaar Ka Deewana, and many more. Though she had a successful professional life, her marital life was tragic.

Asha was very young when she decided to get married to Ganpatrao Bhosle, who was 20 years older than her. She eloped with him and got married in 1949, since her family was against her decision. Asha’s elder sister, Lata Mangeshkar, was very upset with the marriage and disowned Asha. The entire Mangeshkar family also cut off all ties with her.

After Asha gave birth to her son, Hemant, her relationship with the Mangeshkar family turned better. But Ganpatrao never liked Asha meeting her sister Lata. He would not let the two sisters meet and would trouble Asha for money. Their fights would often take a violent turn. When Asha was pregnant with her third child, Ganpatrao asked her to leave the house.

In a throwback interview with Kavita Chhibber, Asha Bhosle opened up about her traumatic marriage with Ganpatrao Bhosle. Revealing how her family disowned her, Asha stated:

“I did get married at a very young age to a man who was 20 years older than I was. It was a love marriage and Lata didi did not speak to me for a long time. She disapproved of the alliance. The family was very conservative, and they could not handle a singing star for a daughter-in-law. There was abuse and ill-treatment, and I finally was asked to leave when I was expecting my youngest son Anand, and I did go back to my mother, sisters, and brother. I do not blame anyone and have no ill will.”
Asha Bhosle’s divorce from Ganpatrao became the biggest turning point of her life. Since she had three kids to care for, the singer focused on her career and released back-to-back hits. In an old conversation with Doordarshan Kolkata, Asha Bhosle recalled her struggling days when she lived away from Mumbai and would travel by train every day to come to the city. Waking up at 5, doing all the household chores, and then travelling to Mumbai for work was Asha Bhosle's daily routine.
