The daughter of Anil Kapoor followed in her father's footsteps and stepped into the Hindi film industry. In her personal life, she is married to Anand Ahuja, and they are doting parents to their son, Vayu. However, did you know that Anil Kapoor didn't have any idea about the meaning of his daughter, Sonam's name? Yes! You read it right, and such a revelation left Amitabh Bachchan in shock.
During his appearance on Kaun Banega Crorepati, Anil Kapoor was questioned with a quiz, wherein he had to choose which of the following names meant gold-like. In the options, Sonam's name was present. Replying to the same, Anil stated that he didn't know that the meaning of his daughter, Sonam's name was 'gold'. To this, Amitabh Bachchan remained stunned and asked him what Anil thought before naming his daughter with such a name whose meaning is unknown to the latter. Big B asked, 'Kya soch ke naam rakha tha'. Anil quipped that he didn't think much.

In the same episode, Anil Kapoor revealed the back story of naming his daughter Sonam. The actor shared that once he was busy shooting in Ladakh, and while doing the same he met a differently abled child, who was so sweet and innocent. Anil mentioned that that girl's name was 'Sonam', and she was so sweet that the actor decided that if he would ever be blessed with a daughter, he would name her 'Sonam' as well, which in Ladakh means, 'lucky'. Anil Kapoor stated:
"I was in Ladakh shooting for Joshile. Waha ek ladki thi Sonam. She was a very nice girl, very sweet girl and she was differently abled. To mujhko wo ladki bohot achi lagi, bohot innocent lagi. To maine kaha ki agar meri beti hui to main uska naam Sonam rakhunga. Ladakhi mein Sonam ka matlab hota hai lucky."
During her appearance in Vidya Balan's show, Dhun Badal Ke Toh Dekho, Sonam Kapoor revealed that when she was only 18 years old, she became financially independent, but like other kids in India, she used to live with her parents. Talking more about what kind of learnings she got to learn from her father, Sonam added that her father, Anil always taught her to make her own decisions in life and never blame anyone if those decisions don't go well. The actress further added why her papa let her make her own decisions in life. She stated that Anil told her that he has complete belief in the kind of education he had given to his kids, so he is sure that his kids wouldn't make any wrong decisions.

In an old interview with the Hindustan Times, Anil Kapoor was asked about his first reaction after hearing about his daughter's pregnancy. To this, the actor added that he was extremely emotional. The doting father also lauded his daughter and added that he was quite sure that Sonam would be a perfect mother because she is a perfectionist.
